Accepting new NHS and private patients

A dentist on Kingsgate Street since 1978

NHS and private care for families across Winchester. Every price we charge is on this website, every clinician's GDC number is next to their name, and if something hurts today we keep slots back for you.

A modern dental treatment room: chair, operating light, delivery unit and cabinetry

In pain today?

We hold emergency slots back every weekday morning and take the first calls from 08:00. You do not have to be one of our patients. Out of hours, NHS 111 will direct you to the urgent dental service for Hampshire.

What it costs, both ways

Most people arrive not knowing whether they are an NHS patient or a private one, and the answer changes the number a lot. Here is both, for the things we do most. The full index is on the treatments page.

One charge per course of treatment, not per item. If you need a filling and an extraction in the same course, that is one Band 2 charge of £76.60 — not two. NHS charges are set by the government and are the same at every practice in England; the 2026/27 figures apply from 1 April. Private fees are ours and are held for twelve months from the date on your written plan.

Everything under one roof

What we treat

Check-ups & hygiene

A full examination, soft-tissue and gum check with a BPE score, X-rays where they are justified, and a written plan before anything is booked. Recall set clinically, usually six to twelve months.

NHS £27.90 · private from £62

Fillings & restorations

Tooth-coloured composite as standard; amalgam still available on the NHS at the back where it is the better material. We will tell you which we would use on our own teeth and why.

NHS £76.60 · private from £145

Crowns, bridges & implants

Digital intra-oral scanning rather than impression trays wherever the case allows. Implants are placed here and restored here — nothing is referred out and then referred back.

NHS £332.10 · private from £780

Root canal treatment

Under rubber dam, with rotary instruments and apex location. Molars are booked as two appointments because rushing the second one is how root treatments fail.

NHS £76.60 · private from £395

Orthodontics & clear aligners

Adult aligner treatment assessed with a scan and a written estimate of the number of aligners before you commit. Retainers are included for the first year — teeth move back, and we would rather say so now.

Private from £1,850

Emergencies

Toothache, a lost crown, a broken front tooth, facial swelling. Swelling that is spreading, or anything affecting your breathing or swallowing, is A&E — not us — and we will tell you so on the phone.

NHS £27.90 · private £95

Who will be treating you

Every dentist, hygienist and therapist in the UK holds a General Dental Council registration number, and anyone can look it up on the GDC register in about thirty seconds. Ours are below. We think you should check them here and everywhere else.

Priya Raghunathan

BDS (Sheffield) MFDS RCS(Ed)

Principal dentist · at Kingsgate since 2009

Took the practice on from Alan Whitcombe in 2009 and has placed implants here since 2013. Sees the nervous list on Tuesday and Thursday mornings because those are the quietest hours in the building.

If it has been a while

What actually happens at a first appointment

Nobody here is going to raise an eyebrow at how long it has been. A first appointment is forty minutes, most of it talking, and you will not be talked into anything on the day.

A dental chart: 32 teeth on two arches, divided into four numbered quadrants, with quadrant one highlighted
Your chart. Quadrants are numbered from your upper right — which, because we are looking at you, is on the left of the page.
1

We talk first, sitting up

Before the chair goes back: what is bothering you, what you are worried about, and whether there is anything that has gone badly for you at a dentist before. If you want to stop at any point, we agree a signal.

About 10 minutes
2

The examination

Teeth, gums with a BPE score, and a soft-tissue and oral cancer check that takes ninety seconds and is the most important part. X-rays only if they will change what we do.

About 15 minutes
3

You see your own chart

The screen turns round. We go through what is there quadrant by quadrant, in plain words, including the things that are fine — which is usually most of it.

About 10 minutes
4

A written plan and a price

Options, what each costs under both systems, what happens if you do nothing, and what we would do in your position. You take it away. Nothing is booked on the day unless you are in pain.

You leave with it on paper

The building

Four surgeries, one decontamination room

Chairside equipment in a dental surgery: delivery unit, monitor and overhead light
Surgery 2. Every chair has a screen you can see, because you should be looking at your own X-rays.
Sterilised dental instruments laid out in trays ready for a session
Instruments are washer-disinfected and autoclaved to HTM 01-05, tracked by batch to the patient they were used on.
A dental chair reclined in a bright treatment room, with the light parked overhead
Surgery 4, the quiet one at the back of the building. It is where the nervous list runs.

From our patients

What people say afterwards

★★★★★

“I had not been to a dentist in eleven years and I was dreading the lecture. There wasn't one. Priya went through the chart with me, told me two things needed doing and the rest was fine, and I left with it written down.”

Hannah M.St Cross · new patient, 2025

★★★★★

“Broke a front tooth on the Saturday of the half marathon. They saw me at half eight on the Monday, bonded it back the same morning, and charged me the emergency price on the website — not a penny more.”

Dev SandhuWinnall · emergency appointment

★★★★★

“Aoife saw my son directly without us needing a dentist appointment first, which nobody had told us was possible. He is nine and now brushes without being asked, which I consider a clinical miracle.”

Ruth ElleryTwyford · family patient since 2018
