The colour changes with the room.

A screen cannot show the whole surface. Treat this material study as an invitation to observe a real sample in the place you plan to use it.

Pigment and gouache study of terracotta, apricot, petrol blue and ivory clay textures
Screen colour is a starting point. Compare physical samples.

A small observation ritual.

  1. Place it as intended

Hold a wall tile vertically and set a floor sample horizontally. The angle changes the reflections you see. Use a stable support and handle samples carefully.

  2. Come back twice

Look once in daylight and again under the lighting you normally use. Note differences in warmth, depth and visible texture.

  3. Put its neighbours beside it

Bring paint, stone, timber and a proposed joint sample into view. The relationship matters more than any one chip.

  4. Look across more than one piece

Ask the supplier how variation is represented. One sample may not describe a whole order or batch.

Keep what you observed.

Add those notes to the room envelope, so the next conversation starts with the actual space.
