The lamplighter’s crossing

Original preview fiction and drawing / The lamplighter’s crossing

At the crossing

At the bridge, the lamplighter stopped to listen. Water carried the evening under the stones; somewhere beyond the bend, a bell sounded once and fell quiet. The lantern had not yet been lit.

On the opposite bank, a window opened. A hand set a small glass on the sill, catching the last of the sky. Only then did the lamplighter turn the wick. One light answered another, and the crossing became a path again.

The passage stays still when you open a note.

Before the first page

A good reading room asks very little of its visitor. The text has a measured line, the page leaves space around it, and the controls stay close enough to find without becoming part of the story.

This room is waiting for the creator’s approved passage. Until then, this introduction explains the surface itself. It gives you a real length of text to try while keeping the book’s voice, characters and events entirely with its creator.

Use the size controls to find a comfortable setting. A larger size shortens the line and makes the rhythm feel slower; a smaller size gathers more of the paragraph into view. Neither setting changes the content or follows you into another page.

When an excerpt is supplied, its title, source and permission should travel with it. A clear return to the book record helps a reader find the edition details without interrupting the passage halfway through.
