The shop

Three barbers, one price board, since 1974.

Walter Hoyle opened this shop the year Leeds market still had its old glass roof. It has stayed on the same forty yards of Kirkgate ever since.

Why Walter opened it, and why Michael kept it small

Walter Hoyle trained on Vicar Lane in the 1960s and always said the big chains taught barbers to work fast rather than well. He opened his own chair on Kirkgate in 1974 with one rule: never book more than one customer’s worth of time to a customer’s worth of chair. Michael took the shop over from his father in 1998 and has kept exactly that rule since — three chairs, three barbers, no fourth chair added no matter how long the Saturday queue gets.

What backs every chair

The standards, explained in English

Every barber says they’re qualified. Here is what ours actually means — each one checkable independently of us.

City & Guilds qualified

Every barber here holds a Level 2 or 3 City & Guilds Barbering qualification, not an in-house certificate we printed ourselves.
What the qualification covers

A fresh blade, every time

Straight razors carry a disposable blade replaced for every single customer; clippers and combs are sterilised between chairs, not wiped.
Our hygiene routine

Patch tests, when it matters

Any beard dye or chemical treatment is patch-tested 48 hours ahead, every time — no exceptions, whoever’s asked for it.
Why we always test

Registered and insured

Public liability cover to £2m and registered with the local authority as a special treatment premises — the paperwork most shops don’t show you.

Drilling a fade in eight minutes sells the next customer faster. Blending it properly takes twenty-five and sells nothing except the cut itself. We’d rather be the second shop.
