Section 01 · The practice
Four people, one room, and fourteen years of it.
Everything on this page is checkable. Come up to Linden Mill on a Tuesday and it will look exactly as described, which is more than can be said for most pages of this kind.

Why a practice and not a provider
Dinah Okonkwo started Millrace in 2012 after eight years at NHS Digital, on the straightforward observation that the businesses most likely to be badly hurt by a breach were the ones least likely to be sold anything useful. The market then was — and largely still is — organised around enterprises: platforms priced per thousand seats, dashboards designed for a team that watches them, and a sales process that assumes somebody in the building already knows what they want. None of that survives contact with a twelve-person architects’ practice in Todmorden. What that business needs is somebody who knows which four things actually matter at its size, who will say plainly when the answer is “nothing, you are fine”, and who will pick up the phone in March when the insurer starts asking questions.
What changed in 2018, and what did not
For the first six years Millrace was Dinah and a laptop, doing certification work and the occasional penetration test. The thing that changed it was an incident in early 2018 at a Sowerby Bridge manufacturer who had been a certification client for two years: a compromised mailbox, a forged supplier bank change, and £41,000 out of the door on a Thursday. The certificate had been renewed six weeks earlier. Everything in the scheme had been done correctly, and none of it helped, because nobody was watching and nobody had ever asked the finance team what they would do if a supplier emailed asking to change bank details. Rowan joined that summer to build the monitoring side, Imran in 2021 to hold the incident work, and Callum in 2023 to take on assessment and training. What has not changed is the shape: one room, four people, no salespeople, and every client able to name the engineer who looks after them.
Who you will actually deal with
Dinah Okonkwo — Founder, principal consultant
CREST Registered Penetration Tester, twenty-two years in the trade and eight of them at NHS Digital before that. Runs the testing work, writes the reports and signs off every piece of advice that leaves the building. If you disagree with a finding, Dinah is who you argue with — she has been talked out of one before, which she mentions more often than is strictly necessary.
Rowan Tasker — Head of managed detection
CompTIA CySA+ and Microsoft 365 Certified: Security Administrator. Built our monitoring from nothing in 2018 and still watches it. The job is mostly deciding what is genuine and what is a printer driver behaving oddly, and the whole value of it is that you only hear from Rowan about the first kind.
Imran Vasey — Incident response lead
GIAC Certified Incident Handler, previously six years on a managed service desk, which is the reason he is unusually good at explaining a bad morning to a director who is not technical. Holds the out-of-hours phone on a rota with Rowan and has run eleven live incidents for our clients since 2021.
Callum, and the part nobody enjoys
Callum Frayne is an IASME-certified Cyber Essentials assessor and runs our training. He joined in 2023 from a further education college, which is an unusual route into this trade and exactly why we wanted him: the hardest part of security in a small business is not the technology, it is getting thirty busy people to care for the ninety seconds it takes to check a sender address. Callum runs our phishing simulations and, crucially, the follow-up — a thirty-minute session booked into the calendar of anyone who clicks, rather than an automated email telling them off. Clicks across our client base fell from 31% to 9% in the first year of doing it that way, and the people who click twice are, without exception, people who never got a conversation the first time.
How we draw the work
Where we are, and why it matters
Linden Mill sits at the bottom of Linden Road, five minutes from Hebden Bridge station and about twenty-five from Halifax. Most of our clients are within an hour: Hebden Bridge, Todmorden, Sowerby Bridge, Halifax, Keighley, Skipton and a growing number in Leeds. The monitoring, testing and certification work is all remote, so geography is genuinely no barrier — but being local is not nothing, and we will not pretend otherwise. When the Sowerby Bridge incident happened, Dinah was in their office in forty minutes with a notebook, and the difference between that and a video call at nine the next morning was the difference between one fraudulent payment and three. We bank in the valley, our accountant is on Market Street, and if we let you down there is a fair chance you will see us in the Co-op that evening.
“I have worked with three security firms in twenty years. Millrace is the first one that told me to spend less than I had budgeted, and then explained exactly why.”
