Symptom checker

What is the heating doing?

Pick a symptom. You get safe checks first, a likely cause, and a clear line where you stop and call. Never open a boiler casing yourself.

No heating or hot water

The boiler is off or not firing, the radiators are cold and the taps run cold.

Safe checks first

  1. Thermostat and programmerIs the room thermostat turned up above the room temperature, and is the programmer on and inside its set times?
  2. PowerIs the boiler switched on at its own switch or the wall? Has the power gone off in the house?
  3. Pressure gaugeRead it. Most home boilers want a reading between 1 and 2 bar. Write the number down, with any error code on the display.

Likely causes

  • Thermostat or programmer settings
  • A power cut or a tripped switch
  • Low pressure, under 1 bar
  • A fault inside the boiler, which needs an engineer
Stop and call if

A fault code stays on the display, the gauge reads under 1 or over 2.5 bar, or you smell gas. Leave the casing closed, and do not take anything apart.

Ring01632 960 612Book a visit

Smell of gas or a carbon monoxide alarm? Leave first, then ring 0800 111 999 (as reported by National Gas) and 999. Someone in danger or hurt? Ring 999 first.

Pressure gauge reader

Look at the gauge on the front of your boiler, then move the slider to match the needle.

Pressure1.4 bar
Normal: 1 to 2 bar

This is the usual range for a cold system. Write the number down with the date, so you can spot a slow fall.

General information for a typical sealed system. Most home boilers want a reading between 1 and 2 bar, so write the number down. Your boiler manual has the exact range. Never open the casing, bleed a sealed system or relight a pilot light.

Safe checks only, general information and not professional advice. Never open a boiler or heater casing, touch a gas fitting, relight a pilot light or work near wet electrics: ring us. Sample content for a fictional firm.

Heating questions

Boilers, radiators and flushes

Plain answers, with the sample ranges on the Prices page.

Once a year is the usual advice, ideally in summer. Many manufacturers ask for it to keep a warranty valid, so check yours.

Water is pushed through the radiators and pipes at speed with a cleaning chemical to shift sludge. It helps with cold spots and noisy radiators, but not every system needs one, and we say so (sample ranges on the Prices page).

Yes, with a written quote, a Gas Safe registered engineer, and the old boiler taken away. We show the card at the door.

A drop can mean a small leak or a worn part. The symptom checker on this page gives safe checks first, such as reading the gauge, and tells you when to stop and call. Never open the casing yourself.

Book a service before the cold comes

An hour with an engineer, a readings sheet you can keep, and a note on anything that looks tired. Boiler services are best booked in summer.
