Private dentistry · Stamford

The dentist your grandparents chose.

Barn Hill has looked after Stamford’s teeth from the same Georgian rooms since 1928 — half-hour appointments, fees published in full, and the third generation of the same family in the chairside seat.

A practice, not a chain

There are dental groups with better car parks and shinier apps. What Barn Hill has instead is Dr Eleanor Wray, whose grandfather fitted the chair she trained in; appointments booked at thirty minutes because teeth and people both take time; and a printed fee guide on the reception desk that has never once been contradicted by an invoice. We are CQC registered, GDC regulated, and quietly proud that our oldest patient first sat in that chair during rationing.

Nearly a century in four chapters

Practices like this are not founded so much as accumulated. The short version of ours.
1928

The brass plate goes up

Arthur Wray opens a one-chair surgery at 7 Barn Hill and starts the patient ledger the practice still keeps, now behind glass in the waiting room.
1961

The second chair

His son Geoffrey qualifies and joins, the practice takes the room next door, and Stamford gets its first dedicated hygienist.
1994

Eleanor takes the chair

Geoffrey’s daughter Eleanor returns from Guy’s to take over — and moves the practice fully private so appointments could stay long and unhurried.
Today

Same street, same name

Digital X-rays and modern materials in the same Georgian rooms, with some families now bringing their fourth generation up the same stairs.

What we do

Everyday dentistry

Examinations (£48, first visit £75), hygiene at £70 or £95 by length, white fillings from £120 — the unglamorous work that keeps the rest rare.

Restorative work

Crowns from £650, root treatment from £395, implants placed here by Dr Sharma from £2,450 including the crown. Quoted in writing, done once.

Cosmetic dentistry

Home whitening £350, edge bonding from £295 a tooth, veneers from £595 — planned from photographs, and talked out of where a smaller fix serves better.

Who you’ll see

Dr Eleanor Wray BDS is the principal and the third Wray on the brass plate; she has practised here since 1994, examines every new patient herself, and keeps her grandfather’s appointment book on the surgery shelf as a reminder of the standard. Dr Priya Sharma BDS MFDS joined in 2011, places and restores our implants, and runs the nervous-patient list with a patience that has become mildly famous in Stamford. Claire Beck is our hygienist of eighteen years — half this town has been told about interdental brushes in her particular tone of loving exasperation. Between them sits reception, run by Margaret, who has matched patients to sensible appointment times since before online booking was invented and remains faster than it.

The rooms on Barn Hill

“My grandfather was patient number forty-one in the ledger they keep in the waiting room. I checked the number on my last visit — we are somewhere past eleven thousand now, and they still book half an hour.”
Dorothy P., Wharf Road — a Barn Hill family since 1936

Asked at the desk every week

The four questions every new patient asks, answered the way reception answers them. The full list lives on the FAQ page.

Yes — new patients are welcome, and you do not need to be registered anywhere else first. A new-patient examination is £75, takes about forty minutes, and includes any X-rays we need. Most people are offered an appointment within the fortnight.

Every fee is in the printed guide at reception and on the fees page here. After your examination you get a written treatment plan with the exact cost of each item before anything begins — the figure on the plan is the figure on the bill.

It will not, and you will not get a lecture. Roughly a third of our new patients arrive after a long gap. The first visit can simply be a conversation in the chair with the door open — nothing has to happen on day one.

Ring at 8:30 and we keep same-day emergency slots for patients in pain. The emergency visit is £95, which includes the X-ray and enough treatment to make you comfortable; anything further is quoted in writing first.
