The Tidewater Letters — sample
Chapter One — The Key in the Tide Jar
The post office had been underwater for thirty-one years when June Carrow got the key to it in the mail. It arrived in a tide jar, wax-sealed, with her name written in a hand she had almost managed to forget. The lawyer’s letter that followed was drier: the town of Harrow Sound, incorporated 1911, drowned 1995, bequeathed to her its last standing office and all undelivered contents therein.
She drove up on a Tuesday because Tuesdays asked nothing of her. The reservoir lay flat as a held breath. Somewhere under it, her grandmother had sorted mail for forty years, licking stamps for strangers, keeping — as it turned out — everything the town had been too afraid to send.
