Prices

On the board, where prices belong, and where they go.

Four public walks, one private rate, one schools rate. Nothing is quoted on application and nothing has a booking fee on top.
The walks

Three public walks, and the prices are on the board

Every public walk is capped at eighteen so the person at the back can hear. Book ahead in August and at half-term; the rest of the year you can generally turn up.

The Shuts & Passages

£14
90 minutes · Saturdays 11.00 & 14.00
The passages between the streets, which is where the town keeps everything it did not want the road to see. Sixteen shuts, one churchyard three feet too high, and the narrowest legal right of way in Shropshire.
Concessions £10 · family of four £38 · meets at The Square

Darwin's Shrewsbury

£16
2 hours · Wednesdays 14.00
From the house he was born in to the Bellstone he could not explain, by way of the school he hated and the chemist who sold him his first apparatus. Peg wrote her thesis on the school records; you get those too.
Concessions £12 · family of four £44 · meets at the Unitarian Church

1403: The Battle

£22
2½ hours · first Saturday, 10.00
The rebellion, the battlefield and the church built over the grave pit, three miles out. Owen takes this one and brings the longbow replica, which is heavier than anybody expects.
Concessions £18 · minibus to Battlefield included · meets at The Square

Private walks for up to twenty are £180 on any route and any date we are free. School half-days are £240 for up to thirty-two, two guides included.

The full rate card

The Shuts & Passages is £14 adult, £10 concession, £38 for a family of four, ninety minutes. Darwin’s Shrewsbury is £16, £12 and £44, two hours. 1403: The Battle is £22 and £18 including the minibus out to Battlefield church, two and a half hours. Ghost Signs & Shopfronts is £12 and £9, seventy-five minutes, Thursday evenings from May to September. Concession means over-sixties, students, under-sixteens, anyone in receipt of Universal Credit and anyone accompanying a walker who needs assistance — we do not ask for proof of any of it. Under-fives are free on every walk. A private walk is £180 for up to twenty on any existing route; a bespoke route is also £180 but needs a fortnight’s notice. Schools are £240 for a half-day, up to thirty-two pupils, two guides, documents pack included, and if a school genuinely cannot find £240 we will find a way, which we mean and have done eleven times.

Where the money actually goes, and what we do not charge for

There is no head office, no franchise and no online travel agent taking a cut: the ticket pays three people who live in this town. Roughly a fifth of it goes back into research — archive reproduction fees, photographic copies, and the two days a month Peg still spends in the county record office, which is where every new stop on every walk comes from. Prices have risen twice since 2011 and both times we said why on this page before they changed. What is never charged for: rebooking onto another date for any reason at all, up to the morning of the walk; the printed reading card at the end; a place for a support worker or assistance dog; and the phone call where you ask which walk suits your mother-in-law, which Isla will happily spend fifteen minutes on. If we cancel for weather you are refunded in full within two working days without having to chase, and if you finish a walk feeling it was not worth the money, say so at The Square and we will give it back on the spot. That has happened three times in fourteen years and we would rather it stayed a real offer than a form of words.
The season list
One email a month from February to November: which walks are running, what has changed on them, and the odd photograph from the archive. About four hundred people get it and nobody has ever been sold anything.
Next walk

Saturday, eleven o’clock, by the statue.

Book online, or simply turn up ten minutes before and pay Peg on the pavement — we hold four places on every walk for people who did the second thing. Wear something you can walk a mile and a quarter in.
