Eight kinds of work

Everything that carries water and heat

Emergency repairs, boilers, radiators, bathrooms, taps and pipework, drains, hot water and landlord checks. Each one comes with the price first, a named engineer and a written note of what was done.

Emergency repairs

Burst pipes, leaks through a ceiling, a stopcock that will not close. A person answers the line, tells you the call-out fee and the usual arrival time, and the van sets off.

  • A live person on the 24/7 line, not a call-back form
  • Call-out fee and arrival window said before the van leaves
  • Water off, dried out and the cause found, with a written note of what was done
  • Temporary repairs when a part has to be ordered
Call-out £75, 24/7
Serviced, repaired and replaced

Boilers and heating

Annual boiler services, repairs and replacements, with a written quote for any new boiler. All gas work is done by a Gas Safe registered engineer, who shows the card at the door.

  • Annual boiler service with a readings sheet you can keep
  • Repairs on most makes, with spares on the van for common faults (sample)
  • Replacement quotes in writing, with the old unit taken away
  • A Gas Safe registered engineer for every gas job
New boilers quoted in writing
Warm all the way across

Radiators and power flushing

Cold spots, noisy radiators and slow-to-heat rooms. We balance, bleed, swap valves and, when the system really needs it, power flush it, and say so when it does not.

  • Bleeding, balancing and thermostatic valve swaps
  • New radiators fitted and old ones taken away
  • Power flush only when a check shows sludge
  • A before and after temperature note
Quoted after a quick check
One price, in writing

Bathrooms and showers

A shower swap in a day or a whole new bathroom in a fortnight, with every line of the price on paper before the first tile comes off.

  • Shower swaps, new suites and wet rooms
  • Waste removal and making good included in the quote
  • A stage-by-stage plan with the days it will take
  • Tiling and electrics with trusted partners, named on the quote
A written, line-by-line quote
The small jobs that keep a house dry

Taps, toilets and pipework

Dripping taps, running cisterns, leaking valves and tired pipework. We fix it the first time where we can and show you the old part.

  • Tap, valve and cistern repairs and swaps
  • Dishwasher and washing machine hook-ups
  • Outside taps and garden supply pipes
  • Replacing old lead or failing pipework
Call-out £75, first 30 minutes included
Cleared, and checked with a camera

Drains and blockages

Blocked sinks, toilets and drains, cleared with the right tool and checked with a camera so you know the cause and not only the symptom.

  • Sinks, basins, baths and toilets cleared
  • Drain camera checks, with a short clip kept for you
  • Jetting for stubborn or repeat blockages
  • Advice on what to keep out of the pipe
Call-out £75, camera check on request
Cylinders, immersions and pressure

Hot water and tanks

No hot water, a tired cylinder or poor pressure. We test, repair or replace the cylinder, immersion heater and controls, and explain what we find.

  • Immersion heater and thermostat replacement
  • Cylinder repair and replacement
  • Pressure checks and pump or valve swaps
  • A written note of what failed and why
Call-out £75 plus parts
Records tenants and agents can trust

Landlord safety checks

Annual gas safety checks with a record for your tenants, plus smoke and carbon monoxide alarm checks and simple legionella advice, booked by the property.

  • Annual gas safety check by a Gas Safe registered engineer
  • A dated record for the tenant and your files
  • Smoke and CO alarm checks while we are there
  • One invoice per property, or one per portfolio

Check the card

Who is at your door?

Anyone can say they are qualified. Here is what the real card or registration looks like, and how to check it before you let someone in.

If something does not check out

Do not let them in

Be polite and firm: say you will rebook once you have checked. A genuine engineer will understand.

We can tell you what a registered engineer should be able to show you, and send one. 01632 960 612

Report it

Report gas work by someone who is not on the register to the Gas Safe Register, and other trading problems to Trading Standards through Citizens Advice (as reported by those bodies). General information, not legal advice.

Smell of gas or a carbon monoxide alarm? Leave the building and ring 0800 111 999 (the gas emergency number, as reported by National Gas), and 999 if anyone feels unwell. Do not wait for anyone to turn up first.

Over a quarter have been scammed

WaterSafe says over a quarter of people have been scammed by rogue plumbers (as reported by WaterSafe).

Gas work is for registered engineers

By law gas work must be done by a registered engineer. The card shows a 7-digit licence number (as reported by the Gas Safe Register).

WRAS tests fittings, not people

A WRAS-approved tap or valve tells you about the product. It says nothing about the person fitting it.

Every name, number and date on this card is a sample, and the card design is invented. Rules change: check the official registers. General information, not legal advice.

Plumber or gas engineer?

Two jobs, two cards

A plumber works on water: taps, pipes, cisterns, radiators and drains. Anyone who works on gas, including a boiler, a gas hob or a gas fire, must be on the Gas Safe Register by law (as reported by the Gas Safe Register). Many plumbers hold both. Ask which one the job needs.

“Approved plumber” has its own meaning for water work. As reported by WaterSafe and Logic4Training, WaterSafe is the public directory of approved plumbers, WIAPS is a membership scheme for plumbers run by Water Regs UK, and WRAS tests fittings, not people. Check the directory, not a sticker on a van.

  • We say on the quote which kind of work each line is, and who does it.
  • A gas appliance is never fitted or repaired by anyone without a Gas Safe registered engineer.
  • Brimwell is a fictional firm, so no real licence numbers appear on this site.

Not sure which service you need?

Describe it when you ring and Aisha will say who should come, what it is likely to cost and how soon.
