Sheet 02 · What we do

Servicing, MOT, diagnostics, and the awkward jobs.

Four ramps, an MOT lane and a diagnostic rig. If it has wheels and it is not an HGV, the answer is almost always yes.

Three kinds of work come through this door

Scheduled servicing and MOT

Interim and full services to the manufacturer schedule, with the book stamped and the invoice trail kept so your warranty stays intact. MOTs on our own lane at the statutory £54.85, which means a fail becomes a conversation instead of a second appointment somewhere else.

Diagnostics and repair

Live data, stored codes and a technician who will drive your car until it misbehaves. Brakes, clutches, cambelts, suspension, cooling, electrics and the warning light three other garages have already reset without fixing.

Older and enthusiast cars

Recommissioning, carburettor and ignition setup, brake and fuel system overhauls, and honest advice on whether a car is worth the money you are about to spend on it. Ray is in on Thursdays for exactly this.

What the common jobs cost

Published in full, because the first question on the phone is always this one. Labour is £68 an hour, charged in quarter hours, and nothing is added to a bill that was not agreed first.

Everything we look at, and how we look at it

Point at any station on the drawing. This is the same order we work in, front to back, on every car that comes through the door — and the reason a service here takes two hours rather than forty minutes.

Engine, oil and fluids

Oil and filter to the manufacturer’s grade, never a universal 10w40 out of a drum. We check coolant strength with a refractometer, brake fluid with a moisture tester, and photograph the dipstick before and after so you can see what came out.
Included in every full service — no station is ever skipped to hit a time.

Our parts policy, in one paragraph

We fit genuine or OE-equivalent parts and we tell you which before we order, along with the price difference. On anything safety-critical — brakes, steering, cambelts, water pumps — we fit the manufacturer part and will not be talked out of it, because the labour to do that job twice costs more than the part ever saved. Everything we supply carries three years or 36,000 miles on parts and labour. If you would rather supply your own parts we will happily fit them and charge labour only, but we cannot warranty a component we did not buy, and if it fails you pay the labour again.

What a full service here actually includes

Engine oil to the manufacturer’s grade and an oil filter of matching specification, never a universal filter out of a drum. Air, pollen and fuel filters as scheduled. Brake fluid moisture-tested and coolant strength measured with a refractometer rather than guessed at. Plugs where they are due. All four tyres checked across three tread bands, pressures set to the plate, and the spare checked too, which is the one everybody forgets. Then a 61-point inspection on the ramp with photographs of anything we flag, written up as a report you keep — not a tick sheet, an actual account of the condition of your car.

“They sent me photographs of my own brake discs with a ruler against them. I did not know a garage could do that.”

Not sure what you need?

Describe the symptom. We’ll name the job.

You do not need to know what is wrong before you ring — that is our job. Tell us what it sounds like, when it happens and what the dashboard is doing, and we will tell you what we think it is and what it is likely to cost.
