The travel clinic
Helen Grady runs the travel service on Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings. Come six to eight weeks before you fly if you can — some courses need time — but come anyway if you can’t: there is nearly always something worth doing, even the week before. The £35 review covers your whole itinerary and a written risk plan; vaccines themselves are charged at pharmacy cost, listed at reception and quoted before anything is drawn up. We hold stock for the common schedules — hepatitis A and B, typhoid, rabies, tick-borne encephalitis — and we are a registered yellow fever centre, which the clinics in Leeds will otherwise send you here for anyway. Children travelling on a family itinerary are reviewed alongside their parents in the same appointment.
Who we see
Adults, children from the age of one, and a steady stream of people passing through Wharfedale — walkers who have done something regrettable to a knee, grandparents visiting for the week, contractors a long way from their own GP. You do not need to live locally, you do not need to register in advance, and you do not need to leave your NHS practice. We also see patients for second opinions, with their existing notes read properly beforehand, and we run occupational medicals — HGV, taxi and offshore — on Friday afternoons at fixed written fees.
Tests, results and what happens next
Bloods are taken in-house by Helen Grady, couriered twice daily, and most panels are back within 24 to 48 hours. A clinician — never a text message — telephones you with anything abnormal, and every result arrives in writing with a plain-English note of what it means and what, if anything, we should do. Referrals go out within one working day to named consultants we know at the Yorkshire Clinic, Spire Leeds and the Nuffield, and we chase the appointment so you don’t have to.
Not sure what you need?
Start with a phone call. It costs nothing.
Tell reception what is going on and they will book the right length of appointment with the right clinician — or tell you honestly if the NHS route is the better one for this.
