Section 02 · What we do
Certification, monitoring, testing, and the bad morning.
Four kinds of work, priced openly below. If what you need is not on the list, say so — the honest answer is sometimes that you do not need us at all.
Cyber Essentials · MDR · Testing · Response
Four kinds of work come through this door
Certification and compliance
Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus, assessed in-house by an IASME-certified assessor rather than farmed out. We run the readiness review first and tell you what will fail before you pay for a submission, because a failed certification helps nobody and we would rather spend a fortnight fixing than a morning re-submitting.
Managed detection and response
Monitoring on every endpoint, watched by Rowan rather than by an inbox rule. Anything genuine reaches you the same working day with a plain description of what happened and what we did. You will not get a weekly PDF of 4,000 events nobody reads.
Testing and incident response
CREST-registered penetration testing of your internet-facing systems, and a one-hour response retainer for when something has already gone wrong. Both are written up so that your board and your engineer each get something they can use, which usually means two documents rather than one compromise.
What we do, how fast, and what it costs
Published in full, because the first question on every call is this one and we would rather you had the answer before you rang. Consultancy outside these is £110 an hour, charged in half hours.

What would looking after your lot actually cost?
Move the two sliders to the size of your business and switch on whichever pieces you want. The figure updates as you go, and it is the same arithmetic we use when we write the quote — no discovery call required to find out roughly where you stand.
Anything we would install the monitoring agent on. Phones are not counted.
Including part-timers and anyone on a shared mailbox — they can all be phished.

What a Cyber Essentials engagement actually involves
It starts with a ninety-minute readiness review, on site or over Teams, working through the five controls against what you actually have rather than what the asset register says you have. Firewalls and routers, secure configuration, user access control, malware protection, and patching within fourteen days for anything rated high or critical. Almost every organisation fails something on the first pass, and the most common by a distance is patching — not servers, which people watch, but the laptop belonging to whoever is on maternity leave and has not been switched on since October. You get a written remediation list, ordered by what will fail you and what merely ought to be better, and however long you want to work through it. When you are ready we complete the submission together and verify each answer before it goes to IASME. The certificate lasts twelve months and, if you stay with us, the renewal is included in the retained fee rather than charged again at full price.
And what monitoring is actually like to live with
The agent goes on in an evening, takes about four minutes a machine, and you will not notice it afterwards. From then on Rowan sees what it sees. In a typical month across ninety clients the monitoring raises somewhere north of two thousand alerts; roughly forty are worth a human look, and three or four are worth ringing somebody about. That ratio is the entire product. Anybody can sell you a console that shows two thousand alerts — the work, and the reason it costs £14 a device rather than £4, is a named person deciding which four matter and then explaining them to you in a sentence rather than a dashboard. When something genuine happens you get a phone call, not a ticket. When it is out of hours and you are retained, you get a phone call within an hour, and the median over the last two years has been nineteen minutes.
“They found a forgotten server in a cupboard that had been unpatched since 2019 and was reachable from the internet. We had had two other audits since it was installed. Neither found it.”

Describe the worry. We’ll name the job.
You do not need to know what you are asking for before you ring — working that out is the job. Tell us what your insurer is asking, what your biggest client is asking, or simply what keeps occurring to you at two in the morning, and we will tell you what we think it is and roughly what it costs.
