Five customers, including the awkward one.

What customers say when you ask them properly

A design engineer, a buyer, a quality manager, a start-up founder and a retired toolmaker who has no commercial reason to be kind.

Colin Waite
Principal Design Engineer, aerospace tier 2

“They rang me about a datum scheme that would have worked but would have doubled the inspection cost, and suggested a different one. No supplier had ever read a drawing of mine that closely before quoting it. We moved four part numbers across that year.”

FB
Fiona Brand
Head of Procurement, surgical instruments

“99.2% on time across 340 deliveries, and on the two that slipped they told us before we noticed. That is genuinely rare. Our audit of them in March closed with no findings, which has happened once before in eleven years.”

SK
Sanjay Kapoor
Quality Manager, Class II medical device OEM

“Priya sends the CMM data as measured values, not just pass or fail. When we had a drift on a bore over a long batch we could see it in their own numbers and we caught it at part 180 rather than at goods-in. That is what ISO 13485 is supposed to feel like.”

EM
Elin Møller
Founder, motorsport damper start-up

“We arrived with a hand sketch and no idea what anything should cost. Ruth quoted it, then told us which three dimensions were driving 70% of the price and why. We changed two of them and the part came in at £310 instead of £680.”

BN
Barry Nuttall
Retired toolmaker, Sheffield

“I served my time down the road at Firth Brown and I am hard to impress about a shop floor. Theirs is clean, the machines are on ticket, and there are four apprentices in there. That last one is the bit nobody else in this city is doing.”

The two deliveries that were late, and what happened

Three hundred and forty deliveries in 2025 and two of them missed their date, which is where 99.2% comes from. It is worth saying what those two were, because a supplier who only publishes the good number is telling you half of something. The first was a batch of Inconel housings that failed at final inspection on a bore we had held comfortably on the previous four batches. The cause was a tool holder with a run-out that had drifted inside its tolerance but far enough to matter on that feature. We scrapped eleven parts at our own cost, replaced the holder, re-ran the batch and delivered nine days late. The customer knew on day one rather than day nine. The second was a supply-chain failure rather than ours: a certified bar stock delivery slipped by three weeks and we would not substitute an uncertified equivalent, which would have hit the date and broken the traceability. We told the customer the same day we found out and offered to machine from their own free-issue stock if they had any. They did not, and they waited, and they are still a customer. Both of those are in the quality system as non-conformances with corrective actions, and both are open to any customer who audits us. The reason to publish them is simple: everybody in this trade has late deliveries, and the only useful question a buyer can ask is what the supplier does on the day it goes wrong.

How to check us out properly

Testimonials on a website are the weakest form of evidence there is, because the supplier chose them. Here is how to get better evidence, and we would rather you did. Ask for a reference in your own sector and we will put you in touch with a customer who has agreed in advance to take the call — not a name on a list, a person expecting to hear from you. Ask to audit us: the shop floor, the CMM room, the calibration records, the non-conformance log and the training matrix are all open with reasonable notice, and Ruth or Danny will walk you round rather than handing you to a salesperson. Our AS9100D and ISO 13485 certificates are current and we will email the scope pages rather than a logo. Ask specifically to see the non-conformance log, because that is the document that tells you the truth about a supplier: how many, what caused them, what changed afterwards, and whether the corrective actions are real or a paragraph written to close a finding. Ours had eleven entries in 2025 including the two late deliveries described above. And ask us for the names of the two customers we have lost in the last five years and why, which is a question almost nobody asks and which we will answer — one moved their whole supply chain to Poland on cost, and one we resigned from ourselves because their drawings kept changing after we had cut metal and they would not pay for the re-work.
