Couples

Asked four weeks after the gallery, not on the wedding night.

Everybody loves everybody on the wedding night. These came later, from people who had lived with the photographs for a month.
What couples say once the glow has worn off

We booked them because Esme sent back a two-line email saying our courtyard would be in hard shade at four and could we move the confetti to half five. She was right, and not one of the other five photographers had mentioned it.

Joss spent the first fifteen minutes not taking a single photograph — just walking with our two and letting them get bored of him. By the time the camera came out they had forgotten it existed. There is one of my youngest mid-shout that we have had printed a metre wide.

Six hundred and forty photographs, five weeks after the wedding, and not one of them is of the two of us looking at a camera and smiling. That was the entire brief and they did not flinch at it.

I had not washed my hair in four days and the house was a tip. Joss photographed the tip. It is the only honest record of what that fortnight was actually like and I am extremely glad we have it.

★★★★★

“The sneak peek arrived while we were still in the airport on the way to the honeymoon. Four days. We sat at the gate and cried at a phone.”

★★★★★

“Third session with them in five years. Our eldest now asks when Joss is coming back, which from a fourteen-year-old is basically a five-star review.”

What we ask, when we ask it, and what we do with the answers

Maddie sends one email four weeks after the gallery lands. It asks three questions and they are deliberately awkward: was there a moment you wish we had been closer to, did either of us get in the way at any point, and would you have paid what you paid again knowing what you know now. The answers come to all three of us unedited and we read every one. They have changed how we work more than once — we moved from three group-shot lists to one agreed a fortnight ahead because four separate couples said the same thing about the confusion; we started sending the sneak peek within four days rather than ten because one bride said the wait was the only bad part of the whole experience; and we stopped photographing the cake unless asked, because it turns out nobody has ever looked at that photograph twice. Since 2016 we have photographed 184 weddings and about two hundred and seventy family sessions. Eleven couples have booked us a second time for a christening or a family session, four families have now been photographed by us three years running, and two couples we photographed in 2017 have since had us do their children. Those are the numbers we watch, because a wedding photographer only gets asked back if the photographs turned out to be the ones people actually live with rather than the ones that looked best the week they arrived.
“It absolutely hammered it down from two until four. They never once looked worried, and the umbrella photographs are the ones both mothers asked for.”
