In their words

Five people who have been in the building.

A member, a parent, a school, a funder and a volunteer. Printed as they were given, including the bits that are not entirely flattering.

Leah, 16
Member since Year 7

“I came on a Tuesday because my mate did and I had nothing else on. Four years later I’m doing my Silver and I help run Junior Club on a Monday. Ick has never once made me feel like I was being managed.”

RW
Rachel Whitworth
Parent, Boothtown

“My son is autistic and the first thing Dawn asked was what he needed, not what he’d done. They kept the Loft quiet for him on Wednesdays until he was ready for the Main Hall. That took them five months and no one ever mentioned it.”

PN
Peter Nagle
Deputy Head, a Calderdale secondary school

“We refer pupils to Calderbank when nothing school-based is landing. The difference is that the Trust knew most of them already. I get a phone call back the same day, every time.”

AB
Amanda Boyd
Grants Officer, a regional community foundation

“Their reporting is the cleanest of any small charity we fund. Accounts published every October without being chased, and they tell you the numbers that went the wrong way as well as the ones that went the right way.”

GS
Gareth Sykes
Volunteer, Bike Workshop

“I fixed bikes in that yard as a teenager in 1994. I came back at 45 because my daughter joined. Same building, same smell, same kettle — and the tools are better now.”

Stand behind it

The building is paid for. The evenings are not.

Calderbank has never charged a young person more than £2 to walk through the door, and we are not about to start. Regular giving is what makes that possible — 68% of our running costs now come from people in Calderdale rather than from grants.
