Standards
Regulated, inspected, and glad of it.
The page nobody reads until something matters — which is exactly why everything on it is in writing.
Regulation and registration
Barn Hill Dental is registered with the Care Quality Commission and inspected on the standard cycle; our latest report is public on the CQC website and a printed copy lives in the green folder at reception, next to the fee guide. All three clinicians are registered with the General Dental Council, hold current indemnity insurance, and complete well beyond the required hours of continuing professional development each year — Dr Sharma’s implant work is additionally overseen through her diploma programme’s audit scheme. The practice holds public liability insurance, and our radiography equipment is inspected and certified on the statutory schedule. None of this is remarkable; all of it is checkable, which is the point.
Sterilisation and the instrument cycle
Every instrument that enters a mouth here is either single-use or has been through the full decontamination cycle: washer-disinfector, inspection under magnification, vacuum autoclave, and sealed pouching stamped with the cycle date. The decontamination room was rebuilt to current HTM 01-05 best-practice standard — the one part of a Georgian building where we wanted no character whatsoever — and its logs are kept daily and audited monthly. Water lines are tested and treated on schedule. If you would like to see the sterilisation room, ask; patients are shown it with slightly alarming enthusiasm.
Materials and the laboratory
Crowns, bridges and dentures are made by a Lincoln dental laboratory we have used for over twenty years — long enough that their senior technician has retired teeth in three generations of the same Stamford families, which we suspect is some kind of record. Every lab-made restoration comes with a statement of manufacture naming its materials, and we keep it on your file. In the surgery we use materials with established evidence behind them and resist novelties until the literature stops arguing; your mouth is not the place we conduct experiments. Where a cheaper material would do the same job for longer, you will be offered it — the written plan exists so those choices are yours.
Consent, quotes and when something goes wrong
Nothing irreversible happens here without a written plan you have had time to read, a price you have already seen, and a conversation you did not feel rushed through. If treatment ever falls short — it occasionally does, dentistry being performed on humans by humans — we say so first, put it right at our cost, and record it in the practice’s significant-event log, which is reviewed as a team each month. Complaints go to the practice manager in the first instance and receive a full written reply within ten working days; unresolved ones can go to the Dental Complaints Service, whose details are printed on the complaints leaflet at reception. We have found, over nearly a century, that the practices that survive are the ones that apologise properly.
Safeguarding, chaperones and children
Every clinician and both reception staff hold current safeguarding training, and the practice safeguarding lead is Dr Wray, with the local authority contact routes printed inside the office door rather than filed somewhere brave. A chaperone is available for any appointment on request — yours or the clinician’s — and asking for one is treated as unremarkable, because it is. Children are seen with a parent present, are spoken to directly about what is happening in words that fit their age, and hold the same right as any adult to say stop and be heard instantly. Interpreting for any language is arranged by telephone at the practice’s cost.
“I asked to see the sterilisation room, half as a joke. I got a fifteen-minute tour, the autoclave logs, and a cup of tea. You can tell a lot about a place by what it does when you ask an awkward question.”

The paperwork is on the desk.
CQC report, indemnity certificates, laboratory statements, the complaints leaflet — all of it is available at reception to anyone who asks, and asking will not use up your appointment.
