Trust

The unglamorous things that make it safe to say yes.

Vetting, keys, insurance, and what happens on the day something goes wrong. None of it is exciting and all of it is the reason people hand over a key.

What we can prove, on paper

Everything on this list exists as a document, and any of it will be emailed to you before your first visit if you ask.
  • DBS check on every cleaner, renewed every three years
  • Two written references taken up before a first shift
  • £2 million public liability, certificate on request
  • Employer’s liability — everyone is PAYE, not subcontracted
  • Paid induction: four shadowed shifts before working alone
  • Annual refresher on stone, wood and fabric care
  • Keys numbered, never address-labelled, two key-holders
  • Colour-coded cloths, laundered between every house
  • Written note left after every single visit
  • Accident and breakage log, shown to you within the day
  • Twelve-month rate hold from your first visit
  • No contract, no joining fee, a week’s notice to stop
We are a small Somerset limited company (Bramble & Broom Ltd, registered in England), not a franchise of a national brand. There is nobody above Nell to escalate to, which cuts both ways and is why the number on this site is the office and not a call centre.

What happens when we break something

We tell you the same day, in writing, before you find it. Fifteen years in other people’s houses means the honest number is not zero: it is roughly four things a year. This year: a lamp, a wine glass, two pieces of pottery and one tap washer that was already perished. Anything under £100 we simply replace and do not claim, because arguing about a mug is not a business we want. Above that it goes through the liability policy and you get the claim reference the same week. The breakage log is on the office wall, and any client may read it — including the entries with their own address on.

The re-clean promise

If a visit misses something, ring within 48 hours and we come back and do it at no charge. There is no form and no debate, and the cleaner is not docked for it — a system that punishes people for callbacks is a system that hides them. It happens perhaps a dozen times a year across the round, and when we look into it the cause is nearly always a brief that changed without anyone telling us, which is a fault of ours rather than yours.

“Full deposit returned and the inventory clerk asked who had done the clean. Priya sent the checklist across to the agent before we had even asked.”

Forty changeovers a year and they have never once been late. The photographs of each finished room land before I have finished my coffee.

Eleven years and three houses, same firm throughout. When we moved across town Nell brought the key-safe number with her and nothing else changed.

Tomasz found a leak under the sink before it reached the floorboards and rang me at work. That one phone call paid for a year of visits.

What we will not promise

We will not promise your house will look like a photograph, because photographs are taken in empty houses by people paid to style them. A lived-in house that is properly cleaned still has post on the table and shoes by the door. We will not promise a fixed price without seeing the rooms, and we will not promise a start date we cannot make just to keep you off somebody else’s list — which is exactly what the coverage checker on this site is for. What we do promise is the same person, the hours you were quoted, and a note on the side telling you what was done.
Start with a walk-round

Read the certificate over a cup of tea.

Nell comes to you, walks the house, and writes the hours it honestly needs — not the hours that fit a package. You get the quote, the name of the person who would clean for you, and a month you can cancel any time.
