How a commission runs

Seven weeks, start to finished ring

Nothing about a bespoke piece needs to feel opaque. This is the order every commission runs in.
  1. Week one

    The consultation

An hour with a designer, no obligation: budget, stones, the story behind the piece, and a sketch before you leave.
  2. Week two

    The design

A CAD render you can rotate on screen and ask to change — nothing is cast until you approve exactly what you see.
  3. Week three

    Casting

Cast in-house from recycled metal, then filed and polished by hand before a single stone goes near it.
  4. Weeks four–six

    Setting & finishing

Stones set under a microscope, the band hallmarked, and the whole piece polished to a mirror finish.
  5. Week seven

    Collection

Collected in the boutique with your certificate and valuation, or delivered insured if you’d rather not wait.
What backs every piece

The marks, explained in English

Every jeweller shows a hallmark. Here is what ours actually commits us to — each one checkable independently of us.

A real UK hallmark

Every piece over the legal weight threshold is sent to the London Assay Office and struck with our sponsor’s mark, the fineness mark and the assay office mark — required by the Hallmarking Act 1973, not a courtesy.
Check hallmarking law

Independently graded stones

Diamonds over 0.3ct carry a GIA or IGI certificate — graded by a laboratory with no reason to flatter us, listing cut, colour, clarity and carat exactly as we sell it.
How grading works

A valuation for insurance

Every commission over £500 leaves with a written insurance valuation — the document your home contents policy will actually ask for, not an invoice standing in for one.
What the valuation covers

Where the gold comes from

Recycled 18ct and 9ct gold by default, and every diamond traded under the Kimberley Process — the same standard the trade’s own Responsible Jewellery Council audits us against.

What clients say afterwards

Named where we have permission, asked for at collection rather than at the emotional high point of a proposal.

I chose the stone colour on their website before I ever visited — watching the little gem change from white to blue as I clicked was the moment I actually understood the options, rather than just nodding along.

Every other jeweller we visited would not say a number until we sat down. Solvay & Rowe had guide prices on the wall. We knew what we could afford before we walked in, which meant we actually enjoyed the appointment.

My mother’s ring needed resizing and I was terrified of losing a stone. Elena talked me through exactly how the setting protects them before she touched it. It came back the same afternoon.

Seven weeks, exactly as they said. The CAD render meant there were no surprises — what I approved on screen is precisely what arrived in the box.

Questions people actually ask

The ones that come up on nearly every consultation, answered at the length they deserve.

Because the number is the first thing anyone actually wants to know, and hiding it just moves the question to a phone call nobody enjoys making. Our guide prices are real ranges from real commissions — the exact figure is confirmed at your design consultation, in writing, before anything is made.

Chemically, physically and to any grading laboratory, yes — a lab-grown stone is carbon in the same crystal structure, graded on the same 4Cs scale, and about 30–40% less expensive for an equivalent grade. Roughly half of our engagement ring commissions now choose one. We will never tell you which to pick.

Most can, within reason — a size and a half either way is routine, more than that depends on the setting. Resizing is £45 and usually a same-day service if you booked ahead. Eternity bands set all the way round are the exception; we will tell you honestly at the consultation if your design will be hard to resize later.

Most home insurers want a written valuation, updated roughly every five years as gold and stone prices move. Every commission over £500 leaves with one; for an older piece we can value it in the boutique for £45, no obligation to buy anything.

The gold is recycled 18ct and 9ct by default — melted from old jewellery and refined rather than newly mined. Every diamond, lab-grown or natural, is traded under the Kimberley Process, and we are audited against the Responsible Jewellery Council’s own standard, not just a member of it.
