At home

Six skills. Your own score.

Mark what you are practising. It stays on this device. Reliable means the skill holds in your kitchen, not that it will hold everywhere.

01 Sit

How to practise. Ask once. If the dog sits, reward at the nose, then release with a word you always use. If not, help them once and reward the helped sit. Do not repeat the word.

02 Down

How to practise. Lure from the nose to the floor, between the paws. Reward on the floor, not on the way down. Keep the sessions to a minute.

03 Wait

How to practise. A wait is a pause, not a statue. Count two seconds, reward in position, then release. Add time before you add distance.

04 Come when called

How to practise. Start indoors, on a boring moment. Say the name, then ‘come’, and pay well when they arrive. Practise on a long line outside before you try it free.

05 Loose lead

How to practise. Walk two steps, reward beside your leg, and stop when the lead tightens. Move again when it slackens. Short and frequent beats a long march.

06 Settle

How to practise. A mat, a chew, and you sitting still. Reward the dog for staying on the mat. Pick the mat up when you are finished so the mat means rest.
