About Mara

A fictional editor who keeps the long pieces from being hurried.

Mara Ellison edits Longform Ledger from a rented room above a stationer’s, close enough to the high street to hear the shutters and far enough not to join the queue. She is interested in the ordinary when it is looked at for longer than a caption allows: a cut behind the allotments, a bowl left in the sun, a tool put down mid-thought.

She prefers the second cup to the first, blank spines to loud ones, and rooms that can be measured by their window. The Ledger began as six folded sheets passed between readers who had grown tired of pieces that ended before they had arrived anywhere.

It is still small on purpose. The essays are reported only in the sense that someone went and looked. They are not advice. If a glove goes missing in one of them, it is because a glove went missing, not because the loss is a metaphor she is willing to explain.

Mara Ellison is a fictional editor created for this magazine. Any resemblance to a living writer is an accident of the light, and no real publication, prize, or print run is claimed.
