How Alabama’s digital economy grew

Birmingham is founded

Jones Valley turned out to be one of the only places on Earth where iron ore, coal and limestone — all three ingredients for making steel — sit close together. Birmingham grew so fast on the back of it that it earned the nickname “the Magic City.”

Rocket City: from cotton fields to the Moon

Huntsville was a cotton town until the Army moved a captured German rocket team there in 1950. NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center followed in 1960, and Wernher von Braun’s engineers designed the Saturn V rocket that put the first astronauts on the Moon in 1969. The U.S. Space & Rocket Center, which opened in 1970, now holds one of only three Saturn V rockets left in the world.

Redstone Arsenal today hosts more than 75 federal tenant organizations — the FBI, the Army’s Aviation and Missile Command, the Missile Defense Agency — and a daily workforce of 36,000 to 40,000 people. Von Braun also backed Cummings Research Park in 1962, which has grown into the second-largest research park in the United States: 3,843 acres, 300-plus companies, more than 26,000 employees.

Detroit South: four automakers, one state

Mercedes-Benz broke the ice in Vance in 1993, choosing Alabama for its first passenger-car plant outside Germany. Honda, Hyundai and a Mazda Toyota joint venture followed over the next 25 years, and by 2023 Alabama had become the #1 auto-exporting state in the country — $11.2 billion, ahead of longtime leader South Carolina — before slipping to #2 in 2025.

Mercedes-Benz U.S. International

Vance, since 1993 — Mercedes’ first plant outside Germany, around 6,000 employees.

Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama

Montgomery, since 2005 — $1.7 billion invested, 400,000-vehicle annual capacity.

Mazda Toyota Manufacturing USA

Huntsville, since 2021 — a $2.3 billion joint venture, assembly lines named for the Apollo program.

How Alabama businesses buy websites

The rocket engineers and auto-plant suppliers get the headlines, but most of Alabama’s businesses are the trades, clinics and shops serving the towns around Huntsville, Birmingham, Montgomery and Mobile — four very different local economies in one state.

Trades and home services

Alabama covers a lot of ground between its cities — say plainly which counties and towns you actually serve.

Clinics, salons and studios

Online booking is the expectation now, especially for the younger workforce the aerospace and auto plants have brought into Huntsville and Vance.

Shops and hospitality

Clear hours and location matter most in the smaller towns around the big employers, where a lot of trade is local and repeat.

Why FastSites works here

A state that builds Saturn V rockets and Mercedes SUVs in the same afternoon is a state that appreciates precision on a deadline. A clear one-page site, live in days, at a published price, fits that pace.

Built to name the town you actually serve — Huntsville, Birmingham, Montgomery and Mobile are different markets, and a site that reads like it knows that wins more local trust than one that doesn’t.
