Two of the nineteenth century’s great bridges, built to speed up the post

  • Menai Suspension Bridge, 1826
  • The first major suspension bridge in the world
  • Britannia Bridge, 1850
  • Both within sight of each other

How Bangor (Gwynedd) grew

A strait that drowned people, and two solutions to it.

Telford’s Menai Suspension Bridge opens

The first major suspension bridge in the world. The Menai Strait had separated Anglesey from the mainland by a crossing that drowned people regularly; the bridge made it routine.

The Menai bridges, and joining Anglesey to Wales

Bangor sits beside the Menai Strait, which for most of history separated Anglesey from the mainland by a crossing that drowned people regularly. Thomas Telford’s suspension bridge, opened in 1826, was the first major suspension bridge in the world and made the crossing routine.

Robert Stephenson followed in 1850 with the Britannia Bridge, carrying the railway in wrought-iron tubes — a structure so novel that it had to be tested at full scale before anyone would trust it.

Two of the nineteenth century’s most significant pieces of engineering are within sight of each other here, both built for the same unglamorous purpose: getting the post to Dublin faster.

What that means if you trade in Bangor

Bangor is small, dominated by its university, and serves a large and mountainous catchment across Gwynedd and Anglesey where journeys take far longer than the distance suggests.

It is also strongly Welsh-speaking territory, which makes language a real commercial decision rather than a gesture.

What Bangor (Gwynedd) businesses ask us for

Welsh matters here

In Gwynedd this is not decoration. A bilingual site signals belonging; a badly translated one signals the opposite.

Mountain time, not map distance

Caernarfon, Llanberis, Anglesey. Say how long, not just how far.

Term-time swing

The university dominates the local economy. Plan and publish around it.

A university city on the strait

Bangor is one of Britain’s oldest cathedral settlements and, in modern terms, a university city — the university is the dominant employer and sets the rhythm of the local economy across rentals, hospitality and retail.

It also serves as a service centre for a wide and largely rural part of north-west Wales, with Snowdonia on one side and Anglesey across the strait. That catchment is where a great deal of local trade actually comes from.

Welsh is widely spoken here in a way it is not in much of Wales, and that is a genuine commercial consideration rather than a courtesy. A Welsh-language presence reads as belonging.

How Bangor businesses sell

Bilingually, and with the geography stated. Both matter more here than in most of the UK.

Student services

The academic year is the calendar. Right in September, very quiet in July.

Trades and home services

Name the towns and villages — Anglesey, the Ogwen valley and the coast are all separate journeys.

Tourism and accommodation

Snowdonia and Anglesey draw booked-ahead visitors. Be specific about distances and what is walkable.

Shops, cafés and hospitality

Term-time and summer are different businesses. Publish both sets of hours.

Why FastSites works here

Both bridges were built for an unglamorous reason: to make a routine journey reliable. That is a fair description of a good small-business website.

Live in days, published price, built mobile-first and light — coverage in the mountains and on the coast is uneven. Tell us whether you need Welsh, English or both.
