The world’s 4th-largest economy

California’s 2024 nominal GDP hit $4.1 trillion, edging past Japan’s $4.02 trillion — 4th globally, behind only the United States, China and Germany. A year earlier it was still 5th. The state grew 6% in 2024, faster than the US as a whole, Germany or China, and now accounts for roughly 14.5% of total US GDP — more than double Texas or New York, the next-largest state economies.

The garage where it began

Bill Hewlett and David Packard were Stanford engineering graduates, mentored by professor Frederick Terman — later called “the father of Silicon Valley” for personally persuading them to build their company locally instead of taking East Coast jobs. They started HP with $538 pooled between them in 1939; the garage at 367 Addison Avenue, Palo Alto is a California Historical Landmark today. The chip lineage that followed — Shockley Semiconductor in 1956, Fairchild Semiconductor in 1957, then Intel and dozens of “Fairchildren” — turned the same few square miles into the world’s densest concentration of trillion-dollar technology companies.

Apple

Founded 1976 in a Los Altos garage. First US company to reach a $1 trillion market cap, August 2018.

Google

Founded 1998 in a rented Menlo Park garage. Now headquartered at the Googleplex, Mountain View.

Nvidia

Founded 1993, reportedly sketched out at a Denny’s in San Jose. Headquartered in Santa Clara.

Why FastSites works here

A state that built the modern technology industry still runs on the same instinct: ship something real, fast, and improve it later. A one-page site, live in days, at a published price, is that instinct applied to a small business’s website instead of a startup’s app.
