Colt’s armory: the birthplace of American mass production

Samuel Colt’s first venture failed by 1842. He rebuilt after a 1,000-revolver order from the Texas Rangers, and by 1855 his Hartford armory — its blue onion dome still standing today — was mass-producing genuinely interchangeable parts, assembled on standardized gauges by relatively unskilled labor. By the Civil War it employed 1,500 workers turning out roughly 150,000 firearms a year.

The armory doubled as a de facto engineering academy. Alumni Francis Pratt and Amos Whitney left to found their own machine-tool company in 1860; other Colt-trained machinists went on to found Cadillac, Lincoln, and Warner & Swasey. In 1925, aircraft-engine designer Frederick Rentschler got his company’s name, capital and shop space from that same 1860 tool company — launching Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, still headquartered in East Hartford today.

Insurance, submarines and helicopters

Hartford’s insurance cluster traces to 1810, and the identity has held for over two centuries — The Hartford and Travelers are both still headquartered there. Meanwhile Connecticut’s shipyards and aircraft makers kept delivering genuine world firsts: Electric Boat’s USS Holland (1900) and USS Nautilus (1954, the first nuclear submarine), and Sikorsky’s VS-300 (1939, the first practical helicopter).

The Hartford

Founded 1810 as Hartford Fire Insurance Company — still headquartered in the city.

Electric Boat

Groton, since 1899 — built the Navy’s first and first nuclear submarines, still building them today.

Sikorsky Aircraft

Stratford, since 1929 — flew the first practical helicopter in 1939, now a Lockheed Martin subsidiary.

Why FastSites works here

A state that invented the interchangeable part understands the value of getting the standard version right, fast, rather than custom-building everything from scratch. A one-page site, live in days, at a published price, is that same idea applied to a small business’s website.
