Seagate breaks ground at Springtown
The plant makes recording heads — the microscopic component that reads and writes data on a hard drive.
Springtown, and the part of the internet made here
Seagate broke ground at Springtown in 1993. The plant makes recording heads — the microscopic component that reads and writes data on a hard drive — and around a quarter of the world’s supply comes out of this one site.
It is one of a handful of facilities anywhere that develops the nano-photonic components of modern drives, employs well over a thousand people, and continues to attract nine-figure investment for next-generation data-centre storage.
Cloud storage sounds weightless until you remember it is physical. A substantial share of the world’s data is written by parts manufactured on the edge of Derry.
What that means if you trade in Derry
Derry is the north west’s commercial centre and serves a cross-border catchment reaching into Donegal, which makes trading area a genuine question rather than a formality.
It is a close-knit city where a business is known personally or not at all, so a website usually confirms a reputation rather than creating one.
