Ely was an island, and its cathedral still looks like a ship

How Ely grew
An island, a cathedral, and one of early modern Europe’s largest engineering projects.
The cathedral is begun
Visible for miles across flat country, and still called the Ship of the Fens because that is exactly how it looks from a distance.
An island, and the cathedral that made it visible
Ely was an island until the Fens were drained. The cathedral, begun in 1083, is visible for miles across flat country and is still called the Ship of the Fens, because that is exactly how it looks from a distance.
Its octagonal lantern tower, built after the original tower collapsed in 1322, is a genuine feat of engineering: a wooden vault four hundred tonnes in weight, held up by eight oak posts, with no obvious means of support when seen from below.
The draining of the Fens around it was one of the largest engineering projects in early modern Europe, and it turned an island into some of the most productive farmland in Britain.
What that means if you trade in Ely
Ely is small, wealthy and increasingly a commuter town for Cambridge, which sits fifteen minutes down the line and pulls both customers and staff.
Its real catchment is the Fens: villages spread thinly across a large area where the nearest tradesperson may be a long drive away.

Cambridge or Ely
Many local firms serve both. Be explicit, because the customers differ.

Light pages
Rural Cambridgeshire signal is unreliable. Keep the site fast.
A small city in very productive country
Ely is small — the population would not fill a decent-sized town — and its economy runs on three things: the cathedral and the visitor trade, agriculture across some of the best farmland in Britain, and a commuting population within reach of Cambridge and, at a push, London.
The Cambridge effect is the significant modern one. Ely is close enough for people priced out of Cambridge to live here and work there, which has raised household incomes and expectations without much changing the size of the place.
Agriculture is not a backdrop. The drained Fens are genuinely productive land, and food production, machinery and the trades that serve them are a real part of the local business base.
How Ely businesses sell
To a small resident market and a large surrounding one. The city alone will not sustain most businesses; the catchment will.
Trades and home services
Name the fen villages — Soham, Littleport, Haddenham and the rest are where much of the work is.
Agriculture and food
Productive land and real food production. Say what you handle and at what scale.
Shops, cafés and hospitality
Cathedral visitors, the market and river trade. Publish real hours — a small city notices when they are wrong.
Commuter services
A Cambridge-facing population with more money than time. Evening and weekend availability sells.
Why FastSites works here
The lantern tower works because eight oak posts are doing an enormous amount of quiet structural work you cannot see. A good simple page is much the same.
Live in days, published price, built mobile-first and light — fen signal is not uniformly good. Tell us which villages you cover.
