Garden and outdoor

A short outdoor bench: herbs, a shade perennial, lavender, and trees that can live in a pot. We don't pretend December is tomato season.

What to plant, or rather, what to do

Pick a month. Indoor jobs and outdoor timing, written for a UK year, not a catalogue that ships basil in a blizzard.

October

Indoors. Ease off watering and stop feeding most houseplants. Growth is slowing even if the heating has just come on.

Outside. Tender plants come in. A wet, cold pot kills more olives than a light frost does. Lift saucers so they can't freeze solid.
