How Kansas’s digital economy grew

Cessna, Beech and Stearman found Travel Air

Three founders in one Wichita shop — the seed company for nearly all of Wichita aviation.

The founders who built an industry from a wheat field

Cessna, Beech and Stearman all cut their teeth together at Travel Air in 1925 before splitting into rival companies that still anchor Wichita today. Flat land and reliable weather made it a practical choice, and by 1928 the city was out-producing every other American city in aircraft numbers — the actual basis for the 1929 "Air Capital" title. Textron Aviation, the modern merger of Cessna and Beechcraft, states its brands have produced more than half of all general-aviation aircraft flying worldwide over their combined 95-plus year history.

A full-circle story, twenty years in the making

Boeing sold its Wichita fabrication arm in 2005; it grew into Spirit AeroSystems, the company that builds around 70% of the 737’s airframe — the world’s best-selling jet — plus structures for the 787, 777 and 767. In December 2025, after high-profile quality problems with the 737 MAX, Boeing completed an $8.3 billion buyback of the whole company, immediately committing $1.3 billion in new Wichita investment.
