Admitted to the Union on June 1, 1792.
Bourbon by law, bourbon by geography
Federal law is specific: to be called bourbon, a whisky must be distilled in the United States from a mash of at least 51% corn and aged in charred new oak. Kentucky isn’t legally required to make it — it’s just historically dominant, with the Kentucky Distillers’ Association putting the state’s share of world bourbon at roughly 95%. What’s fully verified: a $10.6 billion industry, nearly 24,000 jobs, 127 licensed distilleries, and a record 17.1 million aging barrels as of January 2025 — more than 3.5 for every resident of the state.
Kentucky’s other export machine
A few miles from the distilleries, UPS runs Worldport, its global air-cargo hub, out of Louisville — chosen because the city sits within about a two-hour flight of most of the continental US. After a 2010 expansion the hub reached 5.2 million square feet, roughly 90 football fields, with the capacity to re-sort up to 416,000 packages an hour. More than 12,000 people process upward of 2 million packages a day there, on 300 to 360 flights connecting over 200 countries and territories.
