About Ancoats

Ancoats has a fair claim to being the world's first industrial suburb. Steam-powered cotton mills went up beside back-to-back housing, so people lived where they worked — which had never really happened at that scale before.

The Rochdale Canal opened through it and the mills grew fast. Adam Murray and John Kennedy were each running firms of more than a thousand people at a time when a typical Manchester mill employed about three hundred.

The mills are flats and offices now. The red brick and the tall windows survived, and so did the density: a lot of people live in a small area, most of them within walking distance of the city centre.

What that means for your website

This is a walk-in, look-it-up-on-a-phone market. People search for what is near them and decide in under a minute.

Opening hours, a map and a phone number need to be findable without scrolling. If you take bookings, take them online — the audience here will not ring during the working day.
