New Hampshire ratifies the Constitution
The 9th state to do so, providing the decisive vote that put the Constitution into effect.
The zero-tax structure, now complete
New Hampshire never had a broad sales or wage-income tax, but it did tax interest and dividend income from 1923 onward. A phase-out law accelerated in 2023 cut that rate to zero by January 1, 2025 — making New Hampshire one of just two states nationally, with Alaska, that charge neither a sales tax nor an income tax of any kind. On the Tax Foundation’s 2026 competitiveness index, the state now ranks #3 overall and #1 on both the individual income tax and sales tax components.
First in the nation, by law
New Hampshire’s presidential primary dates to 1916, and a 1920 date shift put it ahead of every other state — a lead now protected by state law, which requires the Secretary of State to schedule it at least seven days before any other state’s. When the national Democratic Party tried to move South Carolina first for 2024, New Hampshire held its primary first anyway, under its own statute.
