How New York’s digital economy grew
The Buttonwood Agreement is signed
Twenty-four stockbrokers pledge outside 68 Wall Street to trade only with each other at a fixed commission — the founding document of the New York Stock Exchange.
The ditch that built an empire
Thomas Jefferson called the idea "little short of madness." Governor DeWitt Clinton pushed it through anyway, and critics dubbed it "Clinton’s Folly" throughout its eight-year construction. When the 363-mile canal opened in 1825, the cost of shipping a ton of wheat from Buffalo to New York City fell from roughly $100 to $10 — about a 90% cut — and tolls alone paid off the entire construction debt within the first year. Within 15 years, New York was moving more tonnage than Boston, Baltimore and New Orleans combined.
Under the buttonwood tree
Wall Street’s first crisis came before its first rulebook. After the Panic of 1792 collapsed prices by more than 20% in weeks, 24 stockbrokers signed a two-clause pact outside 68 Wall Street: trade securities only with each other, at a fixed commission. By 1817, the same year the Erie Canal broke ground, they had a written constitution and a name. The exchange born under that tree now lists more than 2,000 companies worth a combined tens of trillions of dollars — the largest stock exchange in the world by market value.
