How Texas’s digital economy grew
Texas becomes the 28th state
After nearly a decade as the independent Republic of Texas.
Mission Control since 1965
Every NASA crewed mission since Gemini 4 in 1965 has been flown from Houston, now formally the Christopher C. Kraft Jr. Mission Control Center. Apollo 11’s "the Eagle has landed" and Apollo 13’s real "we’ve had a problem" both came through the same room. Houston adopted "Space City" as an official nickname in 1967, and the thread runs to the present: SpaceX relocated its own headquarters to Starbase, Texas in 2024.
The largest medical complex on Earth
Chartered in 1945 on 134 acres, the Texas Medical Center has grown to more than 1,345 acres and over 50 million square feet of medical, research and office space — by its own description, the largest medical complex in the world. It handles more than 10 million patient encounters a year across 50-plus member institutions, including MD Anderson Cancer Center, ranked the #1 cancer hospital in the country for 11 consecutive years.
