The shed that built an empire
Harley and Arthur Davidson chalked "Harley-Davidson Motor Co." on the door of a Milwaukee backyard shed in 1903 — that’s the founding, not a metaphor. By 1906 they’d outgrown it and built a factory one block over on what’s now Juneau Avenue, still Harley-Davidson’s corporate headquarters today.
Conglomerate AMF bought Harley in 1969 and nearly killed it — cost-cutting produced bikes so unreliable that Japanese competitors ate the company’s heavyweight market share from near-100% to under 15% in a decade. In 1981, thirteen Harley executives mortgaged everything to buy the company back for $80 million. By 1987 the turnaround was so complete that Harley asked regulators to remove the very tariff protection it had requested just years earlier.
America’s Dairyland, by the numbers
Wisconsin produced 25.2% of all US cheese in 2024, more than any other state, across 116 cheese plants, and leads in specialty and Italian-type cheese specifically. It has more licensed dairy herds than any other state, nearly all of them family-owned — "America’s Dairyland" has been law-mandated on license plates since 1940, not just a tourism slogan.
