How Coventry grew
The short version, in order. Pick a year.
The motor industry begins
Coventry built Britain’s motor industry, and spent the next century as the centre of it.
From the motor industry to autonomous vehicles
Coventry built Britain’s motor industry, and it has spent the last decade converting that inheritance into something less visible. The Centre for Connected and Autonomous Automotive Research, a joint venture between HORIBA MIRA and Coventry University, tests self-driving vehicles at the MIRA Technology Park.
Around it sits a connected-vehicle testbed running over public roads in Coventry and Birmingham, and the UK Battery Industrialisation Centre, opened in 2021 at a cost of around £130 million.
A city that once shipped cars now largely ships the software and the batteries that go in them, which is a more twenty-first-century form of the same trade.
What that means if you trade in Coventry
Coventry has two universities, a large student population and an industrial base, all inside a compact ring road, which makes it a city of clearly separated markets sitting very close together.
Customers here are practical and price-aware, and the businesses that win online are the ones that answer the obvious questions before they are asked.
