How Dundee grew
The short version, in order. Pick a year.
DMA Design
Founded in Dundee by David Jones with friends from the Kingsway Amateur Computer Club.
DMA Design, and a city that exported games
DMA Design was founded in Dundee in 1988 by David Jones, with friends he had met at the Kingsway Amateur Computer Club. On Valentine’s Day 1991 they released Lemmings, which sold tens of thousands of copies on its first day and more than twenty million in total.
Six years later the same studio released Grand Theft Auto, which became one of the largest entertainment franchises on earth. DMA is now Rockstar North.
The chain from a hobbyist computer club to a global franchise took under a decade, in a city better known at the time for jute, jam and journalism. Dundee still trades on it, and the games industry here is real rather than commemorative.
What that means if you trade in Dundee
Dundee is small enough that reputation is local currency and ambitious enough that nobody is impressed by bluster. Businesses here tend to do well online by being concrete: what you do, what it costs, who you have done it for.
The city also has a large student and graduate population that never leaves the city centre, and a wider Angus and Fife catchment that behaves quite differently.
What Dundee businesses ask us for
City or catchment
Serving the centre and serving Angus are different propositions. Say which you mean.
Show the actual work
A city with a design and games culture reads visual shortcuts instantly. Real photographs, not stock.
Keep it short
Dundee has little patience for corporate padding. Say it plainly and stop.
