A weaver’s son who gave away 2,509 libraries

Andrew Carnegie was born in Dunfermline in 1835, the son of a damask weaver, in a cottage you can still visit. The family emigrated to America in 1848 when he was twelve, and he went on to build the largest steel business in the world.

What he did with the money is the part that matters here. Beginning in 1881 with a gift to Dunfermline itself, Carnegie funded 2,509 public libraries around the world, on one condition: that the community maintain them and that entry be free.

It was an argument about access — that knowledge should not depend on being able to afford it. Every free-to-read thing on the internet is arguing the same case, generally less successfully.

What that means if you trade in Dunfermline

Dunfermline became a city in 2022 and sits on the Fife side of the Forth, close enough to Edinburgh to be a commuter town and far enough to have its own economy.

That produces two customer groups: households with Edinburgh salaries, and long-established local trade across west Fife.

Cover west Fife

Rosyth, Inverkeithing, Cowdenbeath, Kelty. Say which.

Evening contact

A commuter market makes decisions after seven. Be reachable then.

A Fife town that became a city

Dunfermline is the largest settlement in Fife and, since 2022, a city. It sits close enough to Edinburgh — across the Forth bridges — that a substantial share of residents commute, which shapes both incomes and expectations.

The local economy is retail, services, public sector and light industry, with the Carnegie legacy visible in the parks, the library and the trust that still operates in the town. It is a working town rather than a tourist one, though the abbey and Carnegie’s birthplace draw visitors.

The commuter share is the thing to design for. A lot of your customers make decisions on a train and want to book without a phone call.
