The Room That Listens Back
With Lena Cho, Architect of quiet rooms
Architect Lena Cho built a room to do almost nothing. Then she sat in it, and the silence lied.

The cold opens are spoken by your browser from the script on the page. Photos show the subject of each conversation, not the guest.
There is a room in Rotterdam that was designed to do almost nothing. No echo from the street. No hum from the lights. Lena Cho built it, then sat in it, and told me the silence was lying.
Silence is never empty. It is a frequency you have not named yet. If you stay in that room long enough you hear your own blood. That is not a metaphor. It is a design problem. I had to decide whether the building should hide that, or admit it.
So the room listens back.
Every good room does. The bad ones just pretend they are not there.

The host
One guest. One frequency worth keeping.
Mara Voss used to keep other people’s programmes on the air. She liked the part of the job that happened before the interview: the lamp, the level, the decision to leave a window open so the street could sit in the mix at a polite distance.
Frequency is the show she makes now, from a rented room above a former ship-radio workshop in Rotterdam.
The people you meet here are fictional, written for this template.
