Your FastSites site works fine on its FastSites subdomain from day one, but most businesses want their own domain before sharing their site widely. There are two ways to get there: register a new domain through FastSites, or connect a domain you already own.
Registering a new domain
From your dashboard, open Register a domain and search for the name you want. Available domains show a price and can be added straight to your cart; if the exact name is taken, alternative extensions are suggested. Once purchased, a domain registered through FastSites is connected to your site automatically — there's no separate DNS step.
Bringing a domain you already own
If you already own a domain elsewhere, you have two options:
- Transfer it in. From Transfer a domain, unlock the domain at your current registrar, get its authorisation (EPP) code, and start the transfer. Transfers are handled with the registry and typically complete within 5–7 days once you approve the confirmation email.
- Point it at FastSites without transferring. Keep the domain where it is and update its DNS records to point at your FastSites site instead. This is the faster option if you don't want to move the domain's registration itself.
A word on timing
DNS changes made outside FastSites (at another registrar) can take anywhere from a few minutes to 48 hours to fully propagate, depending on the record's cache time — so if your domain doesn't resolve to your site immediately after updating records, that's expected, not a sign something's wrong.
Once it's connected
Publish your site as normal (see Publishing your site and what happens after) — once your domain is pointed at FastSites, publishing updates the live site at that domain directly.
