Synopsis
The third shard is rumoured inside the Drowned Mint, which flooded when its fires were allowed to go out. Sister Calyx of the Last Lantern will guide the crossing only if the party speaks the names of people the Tide has already taken. She will not speak them herself. Ilen invites himself and regrets his cloak. Brann holds the punt steady and does not look at the door. Maris puts her hand on empty glass and says her mother’s name. The lantern takes it. The door opens on a dry stair. Crown-smith Dace Rook says the three shards can be knit if someone lends a memory that still burns. A voice in the reeds answers to a census name that is not among the living. Ysolde sends word that she will refuse a mended crown even before it exists.
Sample review
I trusted it with a name and it gave me back a staircase. That is the whole trick, and it is not a trick.
Content notes
- Grief, naming the dead, and drowning imagery.
- A descent into a flooded building.
- No sexual content. The cost of memory is discussed plainly.
Reading group questions
- Why can’t Calyx speak the names herself?
- What changes when a door opens dry?
- What would you refuse to pay with?
- Is Ysolde’s early refusal wisdom or another fear?
