A Practice of Staying

Mateo Ibarra talks with Ingrid Cho about tables, unfinished essays, and the difference between staying and being stuck.

Mateo asks what staying looks like when it is not a slogan. Ingrid taps the table, which rocks, and says it looks like this: a wobble you have decided not to solve today. She describes a year in which she did not move towns, did not rename her practice, and did not answer messages that wanted a tidier version of her work. The essays got shorter. The silences in them got longer. He asks whether that is success. She says it is maintenance, which is a less photogenic cousin, and then she asks him to repeat the question because the first time she answered as if a stranger were listening. The second answer is plainer. She stays, she says, by noticing what the room already knows how to do, and by not calling that knowledge a method.#
