What we keep burning
This winter we are interested in what people keep alight, and why. Not ambition exactly — something closer to the small fire you make so a room remains possible after dark. The essays, stories and conversations in Kindling turn toward maintenance: libraries before they open, tables laid for no one, clocks carried back to stations.
We did not plan a theme so much as notice one arriving in the work. You can read three of the pieces in full on this site. The others are here as excerpts, with the complete texts in the print and digital editions.
If you have written a letter and not sent it, we would still like to read it. The next issue, The Inland Sea, is with us late at night, and will be published in January.
