How France’s tech scene grew

CNES is founded

France’s national space agency was established in December 1961. Its Toulouse Space Centre is the largest space centre in Europe, employing around 1,700 staff on satellite and launch programmes.

The digital economy here

The headline is real and recent: Dealroom’s 2025 Global Tech Ecosystem Index ranks Paris first in Europe and fourth globally out of 288 hubs, with an ecosystem enterprise value of $287 billion, 54 unicorns and $6.3 billion of venture capital invested in 2024. That puts it ahead of London, which had held the European lead for years. Station F — 34,000 square metres in a renovated 1929 rail depot, funded with over €250 million by Xavier Niel and housing more than a thousand startups — is the visible symbol of it.

It is worth being blunt about what that means for a small business, though: none of that capital is available to you. It sits inside a venture-funded layer that procures internationally and moves in a completely different register. What it does produce is a large, design-literate, digitally fluent population — and buyers whose expectations have been set by well-made products.

France also holds two industrial economies that have nothing to do with startups. Toulouse hosts Airbus’s global headquarters and the final assembly lines for the A320, A330 and A350 families, alongside CNES’s Toulouse Space Centre, the largest in Europe with around 1,700 staff. Lyon runs France’s biotech cluster through Lyonbiopôle — founded by Sanofi Pasteur, bioMérieux, Mérial and Becton Dickinson, now more than 200 member organisations, with Sanofi Pasteur’s global vaccines headquarters in the city. Both are regulated, documentation-heavy economies with procurement cycles measured in years.

Where the work happens

France is genuinely polycentric in a way most of this series is not — the regional capitals hold industries, not branch offices.

Station F, Paris

The world’s largest startup campus: roughly 34,000 square metres in the Halle Freyssinet, over €250 million from Xavier Niel, more than a thousand startups, opened June 2017.

Toulouse Space Centre

Operated by CNES and the largest space centre in Europe, with around 1,700 staff on satellite and launch programmes — alongside Airbus’s global headquarters and its A320, A330 and A350 assembly lines.

Lyonbiopôle

France’s life-sciences cluster, founded by Sanofi Pasteur, bioMérieux, Mérial and Becton Dickinson and now over 200 member organisations across vaccines, diagnostics and infectious disease.

Bpifrance

The public investment bank, and in practice the funding route most French small and growing businesses actually encounter.

How French businesses buy websites

French, properly. This is the market in this series where an English-only site is least forgivable — not because English is not understood, but because using it signals you are not really selling here. Mentions légales are expected on the page, and their absence is noticed.

The second thing is that France is polycentric in a way the UK is not. Toulouse, Lyon, Bordeaux and Nantes are not satellites of Paris; they are their own economies with their own suppliers, and "we work with Paris clients" is not the credential outside Paris that it is inside it.

Trades and home services

French-first, with the communes you cover named. Registration details and insurance carry weight here.

Clinics, salons and studios

Online booking, clear pricing, and a well-made page — French consumers are visually literate and notice a cheap one.

Shops, cafés and hospitality

Hours, address and menu. Tourist regions get searched in several languages, but the French version is still the primary one.

Industrial and B2B

Aerospace in Toulouse and life sciences in Lyon buy on documentation and precision, across procurement cycles measured in years. Be exact or do not bid.

Where did Dealroom’s 2025 index rank Paris in Europe?

Why FastSites works here

A design-literate market punishes a page that looks cheap and rewards restraint. One well-made page, in proper French, does more here than a larger site assembled quickly.

Live in days, published price, built mobile-first. Tell us which region you actually serve — in France that matters more than it does almost anywhere else in this series, and it belongs on the page.
