How Slovakia’s tech scene grew

ESET is founded in Bratislava

One of Europe’s largest privately-held cybersecurity companies, still headquartered in the city — and founded a year before the country it is headquartered in existed.

The digital economy here

The best single fact about Slovak technology is a chronological one: ESET was founded in Bratislava in 1992, and Slovakia became an independent country in 1993. One of Europe’s largest privately-held cybersecurity companies is older than the state it is headquartered in, and it is still there.

That is not an isolated case, which is what makes it worth building a page around. Bratislava has three decades of continuous software-company formation behind it, and the recent record is real acquisitions rather than only local growth: Cisco’s purchase of the audience-engagement platform Slido was announced in December 2020, and Bloomreach acquired the customer-data platform Exponea in January 2021, adding around 200 people to what was then a 300-person company. Both were founded in Bratislava, which ranks first in the country on StartupBlink’s ecosystem index.

The rest of the country runs on industry and services. Kia’s Žilina plant, opened in 2004, was the company’s first in Europe and now employs roughly 3,800 people — about 8% of Kia’s global workforce — working alongside more than 530 robots, with around €108 million spent retooling for electric vehicles and EV4 production starting in August 2025. The digital significance there is manufacturing technology and process engineering rather than software. Košice built something different again: T-Systems Slovakia was founded there in 2006, exclusively and deliberately, on the strength of the Technical University of Košice’s TECHNICOM science park — the same talent-pipeline logic that built Brno’s and Cluj’s IT-services sectors.

Where the work happens

A capital with a long software track record, an automotive plant retooling for electric, and an eastern services hub built on a university.

ESET, Bratislava

Founded 1992, still headquartered in the city, and one of Europe’s largest privately-held cybersecurity companies. The anchor for three decades of Slovak software.

Slido

Founded in Bratislava and acquired by Cisco, announced December 2020 — one half of the pair of exits that showed the capital producing internationally acquirable companies.

Kia Žilina

Kia’s first European factory, opened 2004, ~3,800 staff and 530+ robots, retooled for around €108 million with EV4 production from August 2025. The University of Žilina runs programmes alongside it.

Technical University of Košice

Its TECHNICOM science park is dedicated ICT, electrical engineering and automation infrastructure — and the reason T-Systems chose Košice in 2006.

How Slovak businesses buy websites

Slovak, and cost-aware. Bratislava sits close enough to Vienna that its costs and expectations differ noticeably from the rest of the country — Košice was chosen by T-Systems precisely because it is at a comfortable remove from the capital’s prices, and that gap runs through the whole market.

Košice is also Slovakia’s second city and the historical centre of the east, with an identity distinct from the capital’s. Addressing it as a Bratislava satellite is the same mistake as doing so with Kaunas or Brno, and lands the same way.

Trades and home services

Slovak-first and local. Name the districts or towns; expectations and prices differ sharply east to west.

Clinics, salons and studios

Online booking is expected in Bratislava, less universally elsewhere. Publish prices either way.

Shops, cafés and hospitality

Bratislava gets cross-border trade from Austria; the High Tatras get seasonal tourism. Most of the rest is domestic.

Industrial and B2B

The Žilina automotive supply chain and Košice’s IT-services sector both buy on documented capability and long qualification cycles.

Why FastSites works here

In a market this cost-aware, a published price is the most useful thing a supplier can offer. It removes the negotiation most Slovak small businesses would rather not have.

Live in days, built mobile-first and light. Tell us whether you are trading in Bratislava, the east, or nationally — the price expectations are genuinely different, and it is better to say so than to discover it later.
