How Romania’s tech scene grew
Timișoara lights its streets
The first city in continental Europe to install public electric street lighting — more than a century before the tech industry, but a genuine and telling relationship with infrastructure.
The digital economy here
Romania has one flagship technology export and a very large base underneath it. UiPath was founded in Bucharest in 2005 under the name DeskOver and listed on the New York Stock Exchange in April 2021, raising $1.3 billion — by a wide margin the biggest outcome the country has produced. The base is real: the ICT sector ran at roughly 6.2–6.7% of national GDP in 2024, with more than 212,000 software developers nationally and multinationals including Oracle operating large local teams.
One precision point, because it gets repeated wrongly: UiPath is a Bucharest company. It opened a second Romanian office and dedicated R&D hub in Cluj-Napoca in 2019, but Cluj is an expansion site, not the birthplace.
Cluj is remarkable on its own terms anyway. It holds roughly 20,000–23,000 IT professionals across more than 450 firms, and on the ARIES Transilvania cluster’s figures one in every eleven employees in the city works in the sector — the highest concentration outside Bucharest. More importantly it is a product-development hub rather than a pure delivery centre: companies there increasingly build and own software rather than only executing work for clients elsewhere, which is a more durable kind of ecosystem. Timișoara runs a different economy again — an estimated 19,000–20,500 in IT, around 11–12% of the national workforce, with Continental operating both a manufacturing plant of more than 5,000 staff and a separate R&D centre employing over 3,500 engineers.
Where the work happens
Three cities with genuinely different characters: capital scale, product development, and automotive engineering.
UiPath, Bucharest
Founded 2005 as DeskOver, listed on the NYSE in April 2021 raising $1.3 billion. The single outcome that changed how Romanian technology is perceived internationally.
Cluj-Napoca
20,000–23,000 IT professionals across 450+ firms, with one job in eleven in the sector. A product-development hub rather than a delivery centre — companies here own what they build.
Timișoara
19,000–20,500 in IT, roughly 11–12% of the national workforce, with Continental running both a 5,000-plus manufacturing plant and a separate R&D centre of over 3,500 engineers.
ONRC
The National Trade Register Office — company registration and the practical first step for anyone setting up here.
How Romanian businesses buy websites
Romanian, and priced against a market with an enormous supply of technical people. With 212,000 developers in the country, a Romanian business has options and a fair sense of what things should cost — this is not a market where vagueness about price survives.
The three cities differ more than their sizes suggest. Bucharest is corporate and capital-scaled; Cluj buys like a product company because it largely is one; Timișoara buys like an automotive supply chain, on documentation and qualification. Pitching all three the same way will misjudge at least two.
Trades and home services
Romanian-first and local. Name the sectors of the city you cover — Bucharest in particular is large enough that it matters.
Clinics, salons and studios
Online booking is expected in all three main cities. Publish prices; customers compare before calling.
Shops, cafés and hospitality
Transylvania draws real tourism and Bucharest a business-travel economy. Elsewhere the market is domestic.
Engineering and B2B
Continental’s supply chain in Timișoara and the outsourcing sector nationally both buy on documented capability rather than presentation.

Where was UiPath founded?
Why FastSites works here
A country with this much technical depth does not need to be sold to on technology. It needs a clear scope and a number, which is what a published price gives you.
Live in days, built mobile-first and light. Tell us which city you actually trade in — Bucharest, Cluj and Timișoara behave like three different markets, because they are.
