The company that put Romanian tech on the map
UiPath, Romania's best-known technology company, was founded in Bucharest in 2005 under the name DeskOver, before listing on the New York Stock Exchange in April 2021 in an IPO that raised $1.3 billion — by far the largest outcome Romanian tech has produced.
That success sits on top of a genuinely large base: Romania's ICT sector was roughly 6.2–6.7% of national GDP in 2024, with more than 212,000 software developers nationally, heavily concentrated in the capital, where multinational employers including Oracle maintain large local operations.
What that produces
A large, mature IT-services and outsourcing economy layered under one flagship product company — Bucharest sells both delivery capacity to international clients and, increasingly, its own software products.
The buyer
Technically capable and internationally experienced, having worked with or for foreign clients for two decades. Bucharest's IT workforce is comfortable in English professionally, while the wider consumer economy operates in Romanian.
The practical read
Bucharest's tech sector is not really shopping for local suppliers — it built and staffed its own capability long ago. The opportunity here is the much larger conventional Romanian business economy underneath it: retail, hospitality, trades, professional services, buying in Romanian, at Romanian prices.

Caveats and sourcing
- Verifiable — UiPath's Bucharest founding, original name, and 2021 IPO valuation raised.
- Approximate — the ICT-GDP share and developer count are industry estimates, not official statistics.
- Characterising claims — the description of the two-tier local market is interpretation.
