How Italy’s tech scene grew

Italy signs the Treaty of Rome

A founding member of the EEC, and the country the treaty is named after — the beginning of the export relationship the northern industrial economy still runs on.

The digital economy here

One statistic explains most of Italian technology: between 2020 and 2024, graduates of Politecnico di Milano and Bocconi University founded nearly half of Italy’s startups. One engineering school and one business school, in the same city, feeding the same regional economy. It shows up in the regional figures too — Lombardy held 3,394 registered innovative startups as of the first quarter of 2025, 27.89% of the national total and more than any other region.

Milan is simultaneously Italy’s financial capital, startup capital and fashion capital, and the last of those matters more than it sounds. The visual standards of the fashion industry bleed into everything else sold in the city, which produces an unusually design-conscious and internationally minded buyer by Italian standards — and the most expensive, most competitive market in the country.

The other two cities in this series earn their place differently. Bologna Technopole hosts Leonardo, operated by CINECA, which debuted at fourth on the global TOP500 list in November 2022 and still ranked tenth as of June 2025 — a single piece of national research infrastructure that happens to be extraordinary, sitting in a regional capital. Its local economy skews toward research computing, life sciences and the automotive engineering tradition of Emilia-Romagna, where Ferrari, Lamborghini and Ducati all sit. Turin was named a European Capital of Innovation for 2024–25 in November 2024 with a €1 million prize, on the strength of a Fiat company town redirecting itself toward aerospace, advanced materials and deep tech.

Where the work happens

Concentrated in the north, and organised around universities and industrial history rather than around accelerators.

Politecnico di Milano

The engineering half of the pipeline that, with Bocconi, produced nearly half of Italy’s startups founded between 2020 and 2024.

Leonardo, Bologna

Operated by CINECA at Bologna Technopole. Fourth in the world on its November 2022 debut and still tenth as of June 2025 — the kind of asset most countries put in their capital.

Turin

European Capital of Innovation for 2024–25. An unusually large base of trained engineers for its size, and a business community more comfortable discussing specifications than most Italian cities of comparable population.

Invitalia

The national agency for inward investment and business development — the practical route into Italian incentives and startup registration.

How Italian businesses buy websites

Italian, and it must look right. This is the market where appearance carries the most weight in the whole series — not decoration, but the sense that the thing was made by someone with taste. Milan’s fashion-adjacent standards set a bar that filters outward, and a page that looks cheap does measurable damage.

The north–south and city–city differences are real and worth respecting. Milan is expensive, competitive and internationally minded; Turin is more price-conscious after decades of industrial adjustment; Bologna buys on technical substance. A single national pitch will misjudge at least two of the three.

Trades and home services

Italian-first and local. Name the comuni you cover, and make the phone number easy — a lot of first contact is still a call.

Clinics, salons and studios

Online booking is increasingly expected in the north. Presentation matters more here than almost anywhere else in this series.

Shops, cafés and hospitality

Hours, address and menu, well laid out. Tourist cities get searched in several languages, but the Italian version is the primary one.

Industrial and B2B

Emilia-Romagna’s automotive and mechanical firms and Turin’s aerospace suppliers buy on specification. Precision reads as competence; enthusiasm does not.

Why FastSites works here

In a market that judges on appearance, a small, well-made page beats a large, hurried one every time. One page done properly is a defensible choice in Italy in a way that a sprawling half-finished site is not.

Live in days, published price, built mobile-first. Tell us which province or region you actually serve — Italy is local in a way national averages hide completely.
