Spain’s three tech hubs are diverging, not converging

How Spain’s tech scene grew
Spain joins the EEC
Accession opened the market and the investment flows that the modern Spanish economy — and eventually its technology sector — was built on.
The digital economy here
Spain has three real technology hubs and they are specialising away from each other rather than competing for the same work. Madrid took the money and the infrastructure: the region raised €806 million in the first half of 2025 alone, 37% of all Spanish startup investment, and it now hosts both Google Cloud’s first Spanish cloud region and Microsoft’s "Spain Central", part of a $2.1 billion Microsoft investment announced across 2024–25. That produces a capital-city buyer comfortable discussing cloud infrastructure directly, alongside the country’s largest concentration of corporate headquarters.
Barcelona’s anchor is different and older. It has hosted Mobile World Congress, the world’s largest mobile-technology trade event, for two decades running, and the annual return built a genuine local scene rather than a one-week trade show. Barcelona startups raised €983 million across 116 rounds in 2024 — the highest of any Spanish city that year — and Dealroom values the ecosystem at $40.5 billion with six unicorns. The 22@ innovation district gives it a physical centre, and the city’s older identity as a design and creative capital has merged into the technology layer rather than sitting apart from it.
Valencia is the growth story and the honest framing is that it is the fastest-growing of the three rather than the largest. It entered the global top seventy in Startup Genome’s 2026 report with an ecosystem valued at $3.1 billion, up 122% since 2021, across more than 1,689 active startups and a record €229 million raised regionally in its best year, concentrated in AI, healthtech and gaming. For a supplier, the useful consequence is that the tech layer there is newer and less locked into existing supplier relationships.
Where the work happens
Three cities with three different advantages: infrastructure, an annual global event, and momentum.
Madrid
€806 million raised in H1 2025 — 37% of Spanish startup investment — plus Google Cloud’s first Spanish region and Microsoft’s "Spain Central". The most competitive Spanish market, and the most enterprise-literate buyer.
Mobile World Congress, Barcelona
The world’s largest mobile-technology trade event, in the city for two decades running. It anchored a year-round scene rather than remaining a one-week show.
Valencia
Inside Startup Genome’s global top seventy, valued at $3.1 billion and up 122% since 2021 across 1,689+ startups. Newer, hungrier, and more accessible to a new supplier than the two larger hubs.
ICEX
Spain’s export and investment agency — the practical route in for anyone trading into or out of the country.
How Spanish businesses buy websites
Spanish, and often a second official language too. Catalan in Catalonia, Valencian in the Valencian Community, Galician and Basque elsewhere — these are not decorative. In Barcelona a Catalan version signals that you are actually operating there rather than selling in from Madrid, and that distinction carries real commercial weight.
The three hubs also buy differently. Madrid is enterprise-literate and the most competitive market in the country; Barcelona is design-conscious and internationally facing; Valencia has earlier-stage companies with fewer entrenched supplier relationships and more willingness to try someone new.
Trades and home services
Spanish-first and local, with the barrios or municipios you cover named. In Catalonia and Valencia, consider the regional language too.
Clinics, salons and studios
Online booking is standard in the cities. Publish prices — Spanish consumers compare before they call.
Shops, cafés and hospitality
The coast and the islands are searched in English, German and French months ahead. Direct booking is where the margin is.
Corporate and B2B
Madrid in particular buys like an enterprise market and will ask infrastructure questions. Be specific rather than impressive.

Why FastSites works here
A design-conscious market with three competitive hubs rewards a page that is well made and honestly scoped, rather than a large project sold on ambition. Ours has a published price and a defined shape.
Live in days, built mobile-first and light. Tell us which region you trade in and which languages your customers use — in Spain that is a commercial decision, not an afterthought.
