How Slovenia’s tech scene grew
Slovenia joins the European Union
Accession put a country of two million inside the single market its exporters and, later, its software companies would sell into.
The digital economy here
Slovenia’s best-known technology story needs locating precisely, because it is usually placed wrongly. Bitstamp — one of the world’s longest continuously-running cryptocurrency exchanges — was founded in August 2011 by Nejc Kodrič and Damijan Merlak in Kranj, about twenty kilometres from Ljubljana, with the capital serving as a satellite office. The headquarters later moved abroad, first to the UK and then Luxembourg, and the company was eventually acquired by Robinhood for $200 million. Ljubljana has been the clear centre of Slovenian startup activity since, and Slovenian startups raised a record $88.9 million in 2023.
Maribor is the country’s clear second city for technology, and its case is a research one. It hosts HPC Vega, a EuroHPC supercomputer operated via the Institute of Information Science, which placed around 107th to 134th on the TOP500 list in June 2021. That is a real achievement for a country this size and a modest one in absolute terms, and it is worth saying so rather than rounding it up. The University of Maribor runs Venture Factory, an incubator for students and researchers.
Koper is included in this series for honesty rather than for hype. Luka Koper, which operates Slovenia’s only major cargo port, has invested in green-logistics and automation including digitised cargo handling — a real but narrow digital story about port operations. Beyond that, the evidence for Koper as a technology hub is thin: a directory count of around 162 "computer systems design" firms in the wider coastal region, from a business directory rather than a statistical office, and no verifiable startup, funding or research story comparable to Ljubljana’s or Maribor’s. It is a working port, and that is what to sell to.
Where the work happens
A small country with one startup centre, one research centre, and one port — and no pretence that the third is either of the first two.
Ljubljana
The clear centre of Slovenian startup activity since Bitstamp, and where the country’s record $88.9 million funding year in 2023 was concentrated.
HPC Vega, Maribor
A EuroHPC supercomputer operated via the Institute of Information Science, placed around 107th–134th on the TOP500 in June 2021 — genuinely national research infrastructure, at an honestly modest scale.
University of Maribor
Runs Venture Factory, a startup incubator for students and researchers — smaller-scale entrepreneurial infrastructure than Ljubljana’s, but real.
Luka Koper
The operator of Slovenia’s only major cargo port, investing in green logistics, automation and digitised cargo handling. A narrow digital story rather than a tech ecosystem.
How Slovenian businesses buy websites
Slovenian first, with English useful for anything export- or tourism-facing — and a lot of Slovenian business is one or the other, because the domestic market of two million is small enough that ambition means selling outward almost immediately.
Scale is the thing to calibrate. This is a country where a record national funding year was under a hundred million dollars. Proposals sized for Vienna or Milan will read as absurd, and suppliers who understand the actual scale of a Slovenian business will do better than those quoting capital-city rates.
Trades and home services
Slovenian-first and local. The country is small but regional identity is real — name the municipalities you cover.
Clinics, salons and studios
Online booking is expected in Ljubljana and Maribor. Publish prices; the market is small enough that people compare.
Hospitality and tourism
Bled, the coast and the Julian Alps are searched in German, Italian and English months ahead. Seasonal hours stated honestly.
Logistics and export
Koper is the country’s route to the sea and the local economy runs on it — shipping agents, forwarders and customs brokers who care about clarity, not polish.

Why FastSites works here
In a market this size, a proportionate purchase matters more than an impressive one. A single page, live in days, at a published price is the right scale for most Slovenian businesses — and we are not going to quote you as though you were in Munich.
Built mobile-first and light. Tell us which languages your customers arrive in — for anyone near the coast or the Alps that is rarely only Slovenian.
The Slovenia series
One piece per city, written in an editorial register for people assessing the market rather than shopping for a supplier.
Ljubljana: where one of the world’s oldest cryptocurrency exchanges started
Bitstamp launched in 2011, ten kilometres from Ljubljana, and grew into a $200 million acquisition by Robinhood.
